Biggest problems out on the ice??

JigginIsLife

Recommended Posts

It seems like every year some kid gets the idea because they see a couple of inches of ice on the lake they should go joy riding with their friends in the car. They normally make it about 30 feet at which time the car falls through. Then the tow truck drags the car back to the shore taking out the rest of the ice. This messes up the access for weeks and makes it really uneven the rest of the winter depending how it refreezes.

You guys covered a lot of them....

*Trash

*Wind

*People crowding your spot

*forgeting things

*But my worst one is when your buddy kicks your lantern (and only light source that night) into the hole, during the peak of the night bite....he then laughs and says "watch it go down on the Vexilar".....at this point I'm only wishing that he would fit down the hole as well wink.gifgrin.gif .....the lantern was eventually recovered after much jigging for it.

Snake river king... We had that happen last year as well, my buddy stepped outside, the other two of us weren't really paying attention, he comes back in rod ($100 combo) was gone. Half hour later my other buddy has something wierd going on with his bobber, pulls it up with a bunch of line and a little dink walleye with a rod attached. Nearest we could tell the wally had pulled the rod in, when the rod hit bottom he couldn't swim with it and eventually got hung up in the other line. Best fish he caught all day, and it redeemed us for not paying attention, and of course we had a celebratory round of Dr. McG's shots.

I hate the snowmobilers (theres usually 100 of 'em at a time) running full bore across the lake. Theres hundreds of miles of trails in this state, find it- I am both trying to catch fish (can't say those sleds don't bother them a little) and secondly trying to get a little peace and quiet. PS- these aren't ice fisherman snowmobilers, there just the joy riding kind

When people drive too fast on the ice. In the back of my mind I kind of hope they go through the ice but then I really dont want anyone to get hurt. So I just cuss at them under my breath and hope everyone will slow down on the ice for everyones sake.

Relatively new to ice fishing so I had a hand auger and was drilling a few holes going after perch and crappie...on my third hole I was cranking so hard that I snapped the bolt in half and was a 1/2 of second to late in trying to grab the auguer before it sank down to the bottom! 20 feet is a little to far to worry about it...

I walk to my spot just befor primetime, drill my holes just to find out that I need an extension which I left at home. The sun is setting, the wind is out of the NW blowing the freshly fallen snow which makes the ice seem to move as if alive there are people driving around trying to get to their spot.I finly get my hole chiped out drop my jig down just as the sun sets. All of a sudden I realize I DON'T HAVE ANY PROBLEMS...

Biggest problem usually involves my transportation onto and off of the ice, and what happens when I'm out there.

Snowmobile, 4 wheeler, or truck... I don't care but when you are on the ice, something bad WILL go wrong. And it is never on a nice day either, usually at night too!

8 miles out on Upper Red, 45 minutes from shore on Lake of the Woods, middle of Mille Lacs, these are places where ice fishing can go from fun to not so fun in a hurry.

Its all about being prepared and expecting the unexpected.

last summer, i put new blades on my hand auger. at first ice, i was on the lake ready to catch some fish. there wasn't even any snow on the ice, it was glare ice. well after getting out to the spot after battling the wind and ice, i finally thought i was ready. nope. i put the blades on backwards so all i did was spin in circles on the ice. luckily there was a guy with a gas auger who helped me out(after a few minutes of watching me try to drill the hole and spinning around in circles)

I did that last year too .Glad to know I'm not the only one, can't believe it took me as long as it did for me to figure it out. I was swearing at the (Contact Us Please) auger for 15 minutes before it dawned on me. I was about to go back to Capra's and tell them they sold me defective blades. grin.gif

The guy on the snowmobile that almost hit the tip-up the first time he went thru. Then comes back on the same track and runs right over the top it and then complains to me because something broke in his sled when he was well over a half mile off of the trail.

Once I'm on top of fish wettin' a line, or just at the perm for the weekend, there ain't a heckuva lot that comes up that I call "a problem". I can deal with #2, forgotten equipment (for the most part), mechanical breakdowns, wind, cold, even getting wet or picking up trash.

But what really sends my day down the tubes, tho, is other people's dogs stealing my fish!!! grin.gif

The garbage bag in a pail thing seems to work.

Yah, its awkward, but works. Cabelas sells a sealable toilet seat that snaps onto a 5 gallon pail, for more "support". I've also read that peat moss or sawdust placed in the bottom, and then thrown evenly on top of each successive "usage" will keep the aroma down, too. One more use for the portable fish house while at the permanent - instant outhouse! smile.gif

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
