I've always used maggots in the past and late last was the first year I noticed some guys were using wax worms with sucess and was wondering what everyone uses out your way? Do I need both? Just curious what is used mostly. Thanks

I use both and always have both with me. I use lots of very small jigs most of the time, size 12-16. For those small jigs waxies are too big and I'l use a single spike. Waxies are nice for larger baits though. Thats why I keep both on hand.

I'm big on spikes for pannies and larger gamefish alike. Spikes hold up a lot better on the hook and keep things smaller in profile. A lot of times if I'm looking for just a small piece of scent then its nice to add a spike or two and not increase the weight/profile too much.

Waxies have their place and time, but I generally never carry them with me on the ice. They are more temperature specific and once cold they are practically worthless if they get frozen. If I do use Waxies, I'll smash them on the hook to provide a lot of juice and flavor smile.gif

I use to just use the waxies, and last year order both from vados bait. Now I always carry a bait puck of both. We found out that the can of multi-colored spikes works great. Allows you to really zone in on the color that they are in the mood for. If you're in an area like me it's hard to find a good bait dealer that handles both of them. So last year I just ordered a can of 1,000 maggots and a can of 1,000 waxies from vados online. Had enough bait early in the season, and then when I took some trips up north I picked up bait for later in the season. Deliver of the bait was fast and of great quality. My brother ordered at the end of November last year and kept the bait in his fridge all winter long. They kept till spring, but he had to sort through some dead ones. grin.gif I think vados is reasonable on prices, but if there is someone cheaper let me know. On the farm pond we fished the perch seemed to prefer the waxies and the blue gill seemed to prefer the maggots. Probably different on other bodies of water.

Spikes or Euros.

I seriously haven't brought wax worms with me in a couple years.

And I only tip my lure with a Euro when a panfish won't hit the plastic alone. Sometimes, you have to tip your jig with meat and a lot of time I start out with meat as well. But you'll learn pretty quick whether you can get away with plastic or not.

If im forced to use bait its mainly waxies. If i need a smaller profile i just use a chunk of a waxie. On a side note, one time I left my spikes in my jacket pocket for a few weeks and they hatched into flies. That was kinda neat...
