Where to look for a giant?

Recommended Posts

If a guy caught the state record and kept it on a lake that doens't get fished much would he have to disclose the name of the lake to the public? Or should you just throw it back and say that it could have been the state record and keep the lake from getting pounded?

Maybe the question is, do you have to give them the real lake you caught it on? I used to read the big fish report in the Duluth paper and would laugh at some of the lakes that fish supposedly came out of.

going back to the original question, one lake that I think is over looked, and will be getting better, a lot better, in the next few years, is Lake Vermillion. I spent an entire summer working on a resort up there and got to know the Cook end of the lake very well. I saw the big ones that people were catching and knew where to catch them. The largest I saw pulled out was over 13, and largest I pulled out was 31.25", and a touch over 12 pounds.

I'd love to learn more about the bite on the Columbia River. Please send me an e-mail when you have a chance at
Thanks!

Yeah I hear about huge Eyes there too. I think Infisherman did a segment on the Columbia a while back ago on them Eyes. Every fish they pulled to the boat exceeded 8lbs+. Seems like an awesome fishery.

My biggest walleye to date is from there but not what I would call a giant. I'm suprised someone from Maplewood would suggest that river. Do you fish it alot.

Find a reasonable lake and say it was caught there wink.gif

I was reading a magazine that said a guy had caught a possible world record from the Columbia. He released it because his scale read something like 11.5. Later, he realized that it was set on KG, not lbs, and after doing the math, realized that it would have weighed something like 25.35 pounds.

What kinda meathead would mistake a 25lb eye for a 11.5? I've never seen an 11, but I'm pretty sure I could tell if my scale was a little off

Thats what I was thinking also! smirk.gif

That's what I thought when I read the article, and the guy is a professional guide!

If anyone's looking for the article, it's in this month's issue of Outdoor Life, mine just came in the mail yesterday.

I think the guy's messed in the head and looking for a little publicity. The people I know that fish a lot can tell the difference between an 18" walleye and a 19" walleye. Granted, we catch a lot more 18" and 19" walleyes but who can't tell the difference between 11.5# and 25#. Which of these vehicles is bigger, the Suburban or the Volkswagon? HMMMM, can I think about it for a minute?

My apologies for "drifting" a bit from the original post but thought if some of you hadn't checked out the Washington forum in a while and saw the hog that was caught on the Columbia(sometime ago, I think), I'd share it. From the little research I did on the Columbia, our average walleye size in MN is stupid silly small compared to the beasts out there.
