Passports.....just to clarify

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to post something here to let people know that Passports are still not needed to come to Canada, nor to enter back into the US. It is for air travel only. They keep pushing the date back, and pushing it back, and there's talk of doing away with the passports, and going to a smart id, more secure driver's license. At this time, bring your birth certificate and a state issued photo id, and you are fine.

Just wanted to post, as many resorts/businesses are feeling the effect of several factors going on with border crossing. Basically, it's no big deal to cross. Most people who have done it will tell you the same.

C'mon up! Clean lakes, no jet ski's, loons calling, and lots of fish biting.

I was curious if the outrageous gas prices were hurting business up there this year..I tend to disagree with the hassle free crossing however.. grin.gif Both times across this winter were SUPER annoying...

I've never had a problem going to or from. I just follow my little steps: 1) I shave and usually have a golf shirt on, 2) we have our id's, certificates and dog papers ready, 3) answer their questions clear and conceise (sp) and 4) I never am illegal.

Two ways to get pulled over 1) if you're not sure where you're going and for how long, or how much booze, etc you have or 2) your with a group of guys and your boat is covered

Now watch me get strip searched tomorrow . . . shocked.gif

Please explain why it was SUPER annoying for you... grin.gif

I do agree it was... good news, I hope the passport thing is waived for Canada.

Tuli: I take my minor son hunting in Canada every year. I always take a signed (by her), dated and notarized letter from my wife stating that my son has her permission to go hunting with me. This shows the border guard that I am not kidnapping my son and taking him out of the country. Also put her cell phone number on the letter. This is NOT a requirement for border crossing, but if you look at all of the missing children posters, it is not hard to imagine that you could be tied up at the border while a guard doing his job, makes the inquiries.

Hope this helps

Good feedback! I strongly agree with Shorelunch and his three rules. Clean cut, know where you are going/what you are bringing, etc.

Most crossings, if you are prepared, are worry free. Having said that, I've had some annoying crossings, where 15 minutes of fishing time has been taken away from me, by the border agents. Then again, it is their job, and they do it well.

Answer to the "outrageous" gas prices. American tourism is down, yes. Is it due to gas prices? Not 100%, but it does deter some folks....which surprises me. WHether you spend $300 on fuel for a Canada trip or $380....Spread that out over some of your other expenses and we're talking $80 higher over maybe $1000? Do I like high gas prices? No. Would an extra $80 keep me from going to Canada for a week? Absolutely not.

Good point Hemlock - And if you fill up before entering Canada you probably wont have to buy too much gas there anyways (unless your going WAY up North) I also look at crossing the border as if it takes me an extra 1/2 hour to 1 hr with the wait/search - big deal – its part of the trip to get there. We have been searched a couple of times and it is pretty easy for them to figure out "pretty quick" you are either going on a fishing trip or just coming back from one (bout the time they hit my dirty laundry they say OK your good to go). Cross legal and know what you have on board when you get to customs and a guy will be just fine.

I cross about 15 times a year and almost never am at the window more than 60 seconds. I've never been seriously searched (US agents have asked to see my ducks on occasion.)

Just answer their questions, no more, no less.

Personally, I'm strongly opposed to the passport rule because it will reduce who I can invite to my cabin in Canada. I also think it will do nothing for security.

That said, I love every regulation that either side adds because it keeps bad yanks out! Two fish/day laws, whatever. It's given me more reefs with no boats, bigger fish. The gun laws have been especially effective! They give me two months of duck hunting with narry another person around. (Get a PALS card and you'll never have a wait at the border, btw)

Of course that's selfish. If I ran a resort, I probably would be [PoorWordUsage]ed!

Traffic is definitely down up there, btw...

just my two cents

whoever was wondering about the passport, you wont need it until 2008 for Canada. My dad is heading up to the English River tomorrow morning and he was told by numerous people that you dont need it until 2008.
