Portable Fish House Fire

Povern

Recommended Posts

A couple years ago, I read in these forums to put one of those emergency blankets on the inside of the roof of my portable house. I looked at many different types, settling on a rather thick one that was blanketed on one side, and had the shiny stuff on the other side. I have been using this blanket for over 2 years.

Today I go out fishing, fire up the heater in the house, go out to set tips and get things organized, 15 minutes later my house is on fire!

Looks like a section of the emergency blanket melted, and fell on the heater, across the gas line and flame area. This piece caught on fire end melted the gas line. There was flames coming our of the end of the gas line.

Net Loss: One portable fishhouse, one vexlar, one heater, one gas tank, and a lot of dignity.

Net Gain: The knowledge that I will never use one of these blankets again.

Let the ribbing begin.

I had baught the reflextix stuff and that is one of the things that I actualy tested for my self, I put it above my Old Buddy heater and I actualy laid it across it. TO my own amasment it really didnt do anything, I mean it mealted it but that was about it. Im glad to hear you are ok, but instead of saying you will never, test them yourself, you might be amazed as to what you find out. Another helpfull hint is if I go out of the house I make sure to move the heater away from the sides. Again Im glad to hear your ok, and a warming for everyone else, check the stuff before you try it.

Was in a bar once looking out over the lake grabbing some supplies before going out to meet a friend on the lake. It was dark and all of a sudden you could see this ball of flame going across the darkness. One old fellow says to the other must one of those comets. Turns out it is my buddy. Big wind that day, glare ice and he steps outside and the shack takes off. The sunflower tips over and starts the house on fire. He can't catch it as he paddles himself across the ice on a runner sled. Hence COMET STAFKI

I myself had a gallon of Coleman fuel blow up in my hand in a 4'X 6'wood house really raised heck with my salute to the female anatomy wallpaper and the exposed hair on my body. All good stories after a while, as long as no one was hurt. Unless your one of my friends who think it even more funny if I have some pain involved.

Wow, that really sucks...Everyone is right though that it could have been worse? I have never had my fish house catch on fire, but in February I had one scary moment. I was fishing in my Clam 5600 out on Lake Bronson, and my Big Buddy heater didn't want to work. It was -30 degrees and it would go for a bit then die out... Well after about 10 minutes of trying it, I disconnected it from the hose and used my Mr.Heater Cooker instead. (Glad I had it with!) Anyways, I had the Big Buddy heater in the house with me while fishing and decided to monkey around with it a little after a couple hours. I pushed down on the Pilot switch and could hear Propane hissing??? (Can you see where this is going??) I decided to keep pushing the button down to see just how much Propane was trapped in the heater (It did cross my mind that this might not be the best idea, but continued anyways)... After about 6 seconds of hearing Propane slowly hiss out...whooof...shocked.gif The entire floor was on fire!! Everything was on fire including me! But as soon as it went up in flames, it died out instantly! Everything was only on fire for maybe a second, but it still scared the poo right out of me...Man, that got my heart a pounding. The only damage was burnt fishing line on my fishing rods that where on the floor in rod holders.

To say the least, now I'm just a tad more cautious!

Cat man gald your alright, a friend of mine had a similar story. He was in his single man portable a couple years ago and it was really cold out so he was going to fire up his MR. buddy sunflower. He had one extra small 1 lb tank in the back that was slowly leaking and when he lit the match the whole house went up in flames. Luckly he was fine except for not having any hair left on his face but weaing carhards really protected him. Now we laugh becuase imagine seeing a 250 lb guy jump out of a house on fire in the middle of the day in january and start rolling around in the snow. Now I keep my tanks outside all the time.....

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
