Lakemaster or Navionics?

Rainman,

If you are only going to buy one chip, and if your focus is only fishing I would get the Navionics chip.

I have both and have found that with a couple of minor exceptions the Navionics chip is more accurate on the water. A couple of examples:

Rush Lake near Cambridge, Nacvionics displays much greater detail, I believe one foot contours (no worse than 3 foot contours, my memory on that is a little hazy). Lakemaster shows the DNR map, very inaccurate, and the landing on West Rush is in the wrong place.

Birch Lake, near Babbitt (my favorite spring walleye hole)

LM is virtually worthless, no contours at all and entire portions of the lake are missing! The shoreline shape is dead on with the Navionics chip and a fairly decent bottom contour is shown. As far as Mille Lacs and Vermillion, LM maybe has a slight edge from what I have heard.

Pool 2, Miss. River, Nav shows the wingdams, LM shows nothing.

The LakeMaster chip does have all the roads from the Lowrance MapCreate 6 software, and the roads are mostly accurate, but again, not always, while the Nav chip does not show highways in detail.

As I gain experience with both chips, I feel that Navionics is underrated and LakeMaster is overrated.

Lakemaster offers differant software which gives you differant zoom capabilities. Navionics offers more lakes. Not all are surveyed lakes but if they haven't there is still a DNR type lake that is drawn on your locator.

I have both. The question you need to ask yourself is what lakes do you need it for and is there a specific need to zoom in really close.

Good luck,

Corey Bechtold

I've got both and they each have their advantages/disadvantages. I'm hoping this doesn't turn into a Vex/Marcm or Otter/Clam sort of a debate. It really doesn't need to. Search the previous posts on the topic carefully and follow some of the advice given there. Take a trip to a dealer who will let you play around with each of them for a while. Soon it will become clearer to you which is the one for you. (Or get both! shocked.gif )

I use both and prefer LakeMaster, because it zooms in farther. But it really comes down to which lakes you fish, and which chip has them. And for the most part only the high-def maps are very accurate, the enhanced maps are okay at best. Nav has a lot more lakes but the majority of them are enhanced, that's why you need to look at the lakes you'll fish the most and decide which chip has more of them, in high detail.

Casey, thanks for the info, I agree that lakemaster should consider an upgrade policy like Navionics, it would certainly be a good gesture toward their repeat customers, and their competition already does this.

They do offer a reduced price uprade for the PC version which provides a good argument that they should offer an upgrade chip policy also. I ordered an upgrade CD to evaluate on my computer before popping for the chip.

I agree that if you can afford to buy both chips, that may be best because both companies have advantages and disadvantages.

A Comparison of LakeMaster 2007 ProMaps and Navionics HD Maps

(on the LakeMaster 2007 Minnesota chip and Navionics HotMaps Premium North chip)

The updated LakeMaster 2007 Minnesota chip has contours for 744 lakes, including 80 ProMap lakes. If it's wider coverage you're after (although they're mostly maps from public sources such as DNR, NOAA, USGS, USACE and others), the Navionics HotMaps Premium North chip has an incredible 5,087 lakes with contours. Only 59 of them are their High-Definition survey lakes, but they also include 24 LakeMaster ProMaps on their chip, bringing the total to 83 very detailed lake maps.

I thought it might be helpful to share some of the research I've done on the two chips. For the 127 lakes listed in the table below: "LMP" = LakeMaster ProMap, "NHD" = Navionics High-Definition map, "+++" = LakeMaster ProMap included on the Navionics chip. Of particular note: If you are looking for the most detailed maps possible among the 104 Minnesota waters listed, 44 are only found on the LakeMaster chip, 24 are exclusively on the Navionics chip, and 36 of them are on both.

I have a Lowrance X-15 in the boat and am getting a H2O hand held. Do the Navionics chips work in these units? I fish the metro mainly so it looks like the chip to go with. I heard there is an update for the X-15 that should make the new LM chip work maybe that would work for the Nav chip as well?

    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
