Next MN state record Muskie

Recommended Posts

I hear all the time that the next state record is going be be caught sometime soon. The current record is 54 lbs caught in lake Winnibiboshish 1957. When will this big girl over 54 pounds be caught and where. I know that it is hard for some of us but lets keep our lake bias' where they belong... under our boats smile.gif

I have my own oppinions but I would like to hear some of yours.

Thanks,

John

I don't know which is most likely, but Vermilion is a contender. One of our own FM members (silver scale) pulled one out last November. I don't have the length-girth numbers in front of me anymore, but when using the girthxgirthxlength divded by 800 it came out to over 50 pounds. I put a picture of that fish in the newspaper. It was a monster. They released it.

I don't know if the question is where it will be caught as much as if it will be kept. There have been fish caught that likely would have eclipsed the current record but they were released. I think the ethics of today's fishermen are pretty strong and musky fishermen in general have a strong tendency to release fish rather than bonk it. If the record is going to be broken, I believe it will be Mille Lacs.

I actually posted that picture on FM! It was a monster! I am a strong believer in vermillion or Mille Lacs as well, I just wish they were closer to my house.

IMHO, the state record is swimming in a bunch of MN lakes right now. I also believe they have been caught and released a number of different times and I'm sure there are/were plenty of catches that no one has heard about. As for what lake it comes out of, heck god only knows, but my guess is it will come out of some lesser known lake caught by a walleye fisherman, and that will be the only reason it was kept. I have one or two of those lakes in mind.

Go figure. Walleye fishing. Those are the type of people that end up catching those caliber fish more often than not.

If you truly want to catch a trophy class musky you will need a few things first;

1)A snoopy rod.

2)A white crappie jig.

3)A dock

4)A 7-10 year old kid.

And no landing net. Then you will see a big musky! grin.gif

RU hit the nail on the head and Spork just validated it with his story this morning!

It'll come from a walleye angler (or maybe little Billy on the dock with the Snoopy pole) and that'll be the person to bring it in and keep it. Personally, I'd take as many pics as possible, let 'er go, and subject myself to endless abuse and naysayers by posting a couple pictures! grin.gif

You always read about about a couple absolute monsters caught by walleye guys in Minn and up in Canada by accident. I know a few guys that were getting frustrated with the muskies getting in the way of their night time Shad Rap trolling last fall on Mille Lacs. I wish I had such problems!

If I was a betting man I'd say that Mille Lacs could/will be the place it happens, I've heard there are a few big ones in there!! I want to see that "phone call" fish Jonesi was talking about! grin.gif

I can honestly say that I will never have the state record, as I don't think I could get myself to kill a fish that big and beautiful. I would surely hate to keep a fish to have it come in 3 oz. short of the record. I would say Mille Lacs would be the most likely lake. I have talked to guys that swear there are 60" fish in there.

Where did the topic starter go? What he just fishing for everyone else's feedback and never even provided his own?

What I find most impressive with the Mille Lacs fish is the girth. There have been a couple fish that were 52" and at or near 50 pounds. There have also been multiple fish in the 54, 55 inch category that were just shy of 50#. These fish caught at the right time would be state records no doubt.

I would have a hard time justifying killing a fish of this stature or any musky for that matter. Pictures are good enough for me and if I catch a fish of a lifetime a replica would suffice, skin mounts look like dump after 20 years anyway, replicas stand the test of time.

if it was a no-brainer state record maybe, and i say maybe i would keep it. we are talking like a 61 incher with a 30 inch girth - a true monster. after waking up from passing out over landing such a big fish and relizing that it has eatin my fishing partner and half my boat i think i would have to keep it. plus it would make a great picture of me riding that fish back to shore like a true cowboy. a wise actor once said "i think we need a bigger boat" in a famous big fish movie.

Sorry, I was fishing Sun, Monday and Tuesday morn. None in the boat but I had a 50" follow my Pacemaker to the boat then it sat there a foot from the surface and just stared at me for about a minute. (biggest fish that I have seen this year) she was pretty.

I think that Mille Lacs is a no brainer, Vermillion is a close second then I like bemidji because of the 57" that a friend of mine has on his wall. It weighed in just under 50 lbs in June! If he catches that fish in the fall, it crushes the record.

Please god don't let it be a walleye fisherman!!!! Or even worse.... a bass fisherman!!!!! I can take a kid catching it.

The reason I posted this was because of all the huge year classes that are comming up. It sure is a good time to be a muskie fisherman. I don't know much about Winni and Cass but it is certainly possible, and Minnitonka is a pretty good bet.

My long shot pic is Big Detroit in Detroit Lakes. Lots of cover, forage and big water. But it gets slammed so i don't know.

My thinking is that most big water muskie lakes in Minnesota has state records in them. Even the smaller lakes have 55" fish in them. But I think the state record fish will come from the upper Miss river. Some fat piggys in that river system!!!!!!

I agree it will be caught by someone not fishing for muskies. My dad got one in the boat that was 51" two years ago on winni trolling for northerns. Caught it on a red and white dare devil. Bad part mom forgot to grab camera so they measured and let her go.
