Mad and upset

HawgTide, I respect your post and see why some may go with the larger lines. However, when fishing smallmouth my partner of many years uses the fireline and there is no difference in time to land the smallmouth on 8-10lb mono vs the 20lb fireline.

I fish small mouth 70% of the time and largemouth to a lesser extent. However, generally speaking I usually land the large mouth in 30 seconds when fishing Senko or spinners.

I also have never seen any scientific data that would support this statement on mortality rates and doubt it to be true. Deep hooksets, extended time out of water, poor fish handling, photo's, time in livewell, tournment fishing and weigh in maybe. Extended fight time on light line leading to increased mortality I would respectfully agree to dis-agree.

8-10 pound mono is way more likely to break then 30-50 pound braid, thats what HT is trying to get at. I use mono on some rigs and braid on others, the only rig I have lighter mono on is my crankbait rods, and thats still 12.9 pound tectan, but its diameter is less than 6 pound regular mono.

The increase mortality comes from the mono breaking and the angler leaving a big piece of jewelery in the fishes mouth. I wouldnt fish any light mono in the river, smallies will go for the rocks and cut it in a heartbeat, heavier braid lines and floro lines have better abraision resistance, and can withstand the beating of the rocks better. I agree that heavier lines arent for every situation, but when finesse fishing look at some of the lighter floro lines, you might be surprised at there abraision resistance and performance over mono!

Understood, however I have been fishing the Mississippi now for 4 years and have many 30 fish days and never been cut on mono. I use new line and if you have a good drag you will do well.

Our cabin is on Vermillion and never lost a smallie there to a cut off either. Missed a ton due to fisherman error or falling off right at the boat but again no cut offs on mono

I'm not a fish biologist, but...It's common knowledge to many anglers, that playing smallies to the point of exhaustion, can be fatal (for the fish).

They may swim away, only to die several days later.

Ya can't buy two doz nightcrawlers for $8.00 anymore. I swear lure's are cheaper than live bait now.

sorry to jump off subject.. but holy cow man... where do you buy bait... i can get 3doz crawlers for under $8

Carl:

I'm the poster guy for Honeywell who invented spectra, or rather the material which we all call Power Pro. (My ugly mug is on their corporate literature). It's a good product but isn't the best of all situations. It has it's limits. Like golf clubs, you should have rods rigged for different presentations and conditions. Power Pro is not good if you are fishing around a lot of abrasives. I find that the certain fish can easily sever it. Use a Polarmar knot as others have suggested. But try this... Use a 3 to 4 foot Fluorocarbon leader. Use a double uniknot or a surgeons knot to combine the lines. A lot like fly fishermen do. 14 to 20 pound fluorocarbon is impervious to abrasions and I have yet had a pike bite off an expensive jerkbait using it. Best of all it is invisible in the water, Power Pro itself really shows in the water. It will help you catch more fish try it!!! Honest.

well I don't particulary want to get into an argument over it being "junk" or not, but i routinely see pros in bassmaster listing powerpro as the line they use. Can't really recall seing spider wire being listed now that I think about it however?

I'm curious as well, as I use power pro for both bass and muskie, and I don't have any issues.

I still re-tie often, as no matter what type of line, that knot is still bearing the stress on every cast.

Ok heres why. I've lost to many big bass/pike to that stuff, and to many lures. And yes I tried all the knots. I've even done some home testing of my own and fund that time after time spider out lasted and is just stronger then power pro. I've had the same line (spider) on my worm rod for 4 years now and I have yet to snap it off. And I have caught some of my biggest bass with it.

I've had the same line on my bait cast reel for 3 years and same thing no lost fish or lures. I've been in the same boat with friends that use pp and watch as they lost fish. I respool them with spider and no more lost fish.

curious as to what pound test you had on? did you buy it online? they have had fake powerpro that has been being sold online at a discount so you have to be careful not to get that.

When an Aero Space Tech does testing, I suppose one should listen up!! grin.gif

I've done well with Spiderline too, but for some reason the Power Pro suits my needs. I've been bit off by pike on the bass gear a couple times, but never actually broke off on a fish or launched the lure that breaks off and goes forever! I think I'll spool one up with the Spiderline again and see if I can tell a difference.

It's like I've said before, this is along the lines of a Chev vs Ford debate.....

I've been using PP and Stren's version and have not experienced any break off from casting or fighting a fish. I cast just as much as any other bass fisherman and have caught my share of northerns with the bait inhaled and line all over their teeth. Whenever I catch a northern I always look at the line for any sign of fraying and retie when needed.

IMHO Poweer Pro is the best braid out there, everytime I use spiderwire the dam stuff wraps around the tip of the rod, and ticks me off!! Plus its flat and doesnt handle well on a baitcaster, just my opinion take it for what its worth

Here is my two cents. I used power pro on both spinning and casting rods for both walleye and bass. I don't think I have ever broke it off. The problem I did have with it was that my polomar knot would not cinch tight to the eyelet and the line would wedege into the little gap in the eyelet of the hook(bass sized hook). When I would set the hook the line would snap through the gap and away goes the fish and lure. To fix that I had to use super glue, which worked well. I now use PP for jigs and scumfrogs. I use mono for hooks that have that little gap. I also noticed that I get more strikes with the mono vs. PP because of the visibility of PP. I should mention that all braids I have tried did this at some point or another.

Don't forget to check your rod guides for cracks. I was cutting all sorts of line one spring because of this.

I've always used 20-25 pound line. I'm not some one that buys any thing on-line, to many nut jobs out there. grin.gif

As for spider being flat, you have to get the original braid. They do sell the flat stuff, I will not use that cause it just doesn't work for me.

I've also used Spiderwire Fusion, hated it. It kinks and snaps off, and if you don't tie it right the knot will pull out. frown.gif
