walleyefisher0990
we hunt grouse around cloquet and it has been very rough the last few years. alot more work to find them but we get a few. I agree with monstermoose, anywhere you can get a few is a good place to hunt.
metrojoe
Me and my setter would be more than happy to come up any weekend this fall and help you out with your grouse problem. Rapala, Are you mainly hunting early or late season?
jlm
There are lots of great areas to hunt ruffed grouse in the great state of MN. By the way, in my opinion, ruffed grouse is by far the best wild game to eat hands down. Anyway, start near Red Lake MN and work your way all the way up to Fourtown or Williams MN. There are thousands of acres of public land and hundreds of miles of trails (many with no motorized vehicles allowed). On of my favorite spots is Beltrami Island State Forest. Lots a great places to go! Good luck!
deepportage01
yep, the red lake area has been very good to us over the years we dont hunt with a dog and still do ok.jlim is rite you can hunt up there all week and never hunt the same area
jbdragon17
I have hunted a lot of grouse up north of Grand Rapids/Deer River...Lots of good hunting land. The birds seem to be coming back, but you will have endless trails and woods to explore. That is half the fun

BobT
I don't know. It's hard to compare pheasant with grouse. My vote leans toward pheasant in that arena.Bob

Bob I agree, there are grouse all over the place where I live, yet I drive 3 hours to go pheasant hunting.
gspman
If you can't be near the bird you love, then love the bird you're near. - Datus Proper, Pheasants of the Mind. I'll hunt any bird that tastes okay and sits reasonably well for a pointing dog so it doesn't matter where I'm at.
2thepointsetters
I have all the grouse I want within a mile of my house. And they are all safe once the pheasant season opens.Because I put 5000 miles on my truck last year driving south every weekend (except the frist week of deer season)to hunt pheasants.I dont think grouse even compare to pheasant. Nothing beats watching a wild rooster burst out of the field.

BobT
As far as the hunting experience goes, I grew up around Buhl in northeastern MN and had my share of grouse hunting and have lived in the Oaskis area now for over 15 years. While there is a certain thrill when you flush the birds off a pointer, I can honestly say that flushing grouse at your toes in a thick forest of underbrush presents a much greater challenge and has stopped my heart on more than one occasion. With pheasants, you can at least see them long enough to get a bead on them.I much prefer the challenge from grouse but prefer the taste of pheasant.Bob
gorrilla
Just reading about your preferences guys, and to each his own....BUT...How can you like eating pheasants better than grouse???I like them both, but I'd put grouse up against any bird, tame or wild. GullRock
No contest, Grouse. You will not find whiter, more tender meat. No comparison here.
Flatlander
You're all crazy. For my money there isn't a better eating bird than the majestic Shoveler. Except, maybe the occassional Merganser.
Jackpine Rob
Partridge definitely taste better than roosters. Too bad the numbers are so low - no partridge to be had this year either.... Everyone's better off heading down LawDog's way to shoot swamp cuckoos this fall. Rumor is there are bazillions of roosters down thataway.
