Rain Gear?

Melon

Question

I'm looking in to getting some new rain gear. I've been researching the Frogg Togg's and am wondering if anyone out there owns a set and what you think of them? Durability, breathability? I need something that can let the heat out becuase I sweat like a race horse!! They have new camo patterns too, seems like they'd be pretty reliable for the cost.

All comments and suggestions are much appreciated!

I have a cheap Eddie Bauer rain suit and it works great for me. Always seems like I am in a cold rain if its raining so breathability hasn't been an issue with sweat but its affordable at around $30 for the pants and coat set. I've put it through its paces and it seems to work well for me.

I bought a set of Frogg Toggs and the pants leak! If you go this route, get the bibs. They don't have the pockets the pants have, which is where mine leak. I even tried tent seam sealer and they still leak! They are nice and light weight, but they are not very durable. I'm still looking for something better.

I have a set and they are quite good for use on the boat. They are so lightweight, break the wind, and keep the rain out. However, they are not so good for hiking in the woods as you can snag them easily. So I've relegated them to the boat only, but find them really nice for that use.

I also have a set of Gander Guide Tech20 Jacket and Bibs and simply love them. You won't go wrong with a set of these. For another option Stearns sells a Walleye-Hunter rainsuit that is also good.

Speaking of the Guide sets available at Gander, what are the prices of these typically? I just got a substantial gift card from there, and after this weekend it would seem like money well spent! Thanks! McGurk

I could not be more impressed with the froggtoggs I purchased last week from Gander for $99 jacket and bibs included, I fished all day friday in pooring rain and stayed dry, I really like the maneuverability and comfort of the froggtoggs it's like wearing a windbreaker.

I went there to get the tech2o but after trying it on it felt to bulky for me, I'm sure it's a great suit and I'll probably get one some day.

Absolutely Gman! I used my bibs all winter long. They're great for kneeling down on the ice. It's hard telling how long these things will last. I just bought mine last year, so....

Think I got my set for around $150 total. They might be full price right now due to the time of year.

I just bought a set of parka and bibs rain gear. I got the MT050 guide series from cabelas. They are on the expensive side, but they are very dry and breathe very well. They are durable and work well for hunting too. They are also very quiet for hunting. Another nice feature is the neoprene cuffs to keep water from going down your sleeves. But, If your wife is like mine, it could take quite a bit of pleading to let you spend that much money for "just rain gear" as she puts it. Expensive but worth the money if you like to stay dry.

I own and have used Grundens for years, they are ugly, slightly bulky and when new have a strong smell. They are also the toughest, most waterproof, most versatile and best value you'll ever find in rain gear. I use them when skippering a charter boat and commercial fishing with nets, I stay dry all day, and hose myself down to clean the fish scales and blood off the suit. I wear the Brigg jacket and Hercules pants, the company has some other models that may be better suited to the recreational user. Grundens is the name you'll see more than any other in the commercial marine industry and for a good reason.

Hey, I just found out that there is a new "generation 2" Frogg Togg available. It is more durable and better looking (impress the fish'n gals!). They are on the Bass Pro HSOforum and are called Pro Signature. If you call Frogg Toggs you can also get them with bibs. Bibs are great until "nature calls" than they are a bummer.

I just bought a set (jacket and pants) of "Frogg Toggs Elite" from Gander Mountain, and they do look much, much more durable than the other $40 set. They are lined and have waterproof zippers all over the place. The odd thing about them is that they have a Gander Mountain emblem silk-screened onto the front of the jacket. Maybe they are selling these to retailers to rebrand? After reading the previous post I think they must be. They are a good deal ($100/set) and I hope they work well. Good Luck! McGurk

The guide series is on sale for a few more days I believe. They were$10 off the usual price each piece. I picked up as set on Saturday. I've heard nothing but good reports on them. But I've heard the same types of reports on Cabelas and Bass Pro's rain gear as well.

I agree. I have the Tech H20 bibs and coat. Thie bibs are on the 3rd year and the coat is on the 2nd. I use both year round. I love them for ice and open water. I have a backup lightweight Marmot raincoat for the really warm rainy days. When I finally wear out the H20's I will definintely go back for another set. I dont know much about the frogg toggs but I looked at them originally when I was looking for rain gear but couldnt stand the "fruity" colors blush.gif
