Great Bass Fishing Day-Spring

SLP

Recommended Posts

I'm just curious what people think a great day on a Minnesota lake would be from a quantity standpoint fishing for Bass with 2 guys in the boat. 10? 20? 30? 50? 100? The few people I have talked to say 75 plus days are pretty common in the spring(late May early June). What do you think?

Last June (not exactly spring), I had a one fish day that was great. It weighed in at an even 6 pounds.

Who cares what other people think! Any day fishing in the spring is great. There's no need to quantify it.

Ask yourself this, have you ever regretted going fishing?

I completely agree! Not sure who or when this started but I know my grandpa used this phrase when he was younger but I have to agree.... A bad day fishing still beats a good day working. But seriously, fishing and catching fish no real number but enough action to keep you interested would be a good day.

Just being out there is enough for me. I dont really have to catch anything. Fishing is my personal quiet time to myself, where I can ponder about life and such. But there was one such day though when I experienced an unbelievable topwater bite. In about a 40 minute span from 8:50pm to 9:30pm, landed 14 bass. Biggest one was pushing 5lbs and the smallest one was about 3.5lbs. It was the best fishing day of my life. cool.gif

For me, it more who I am with. I can be on the best bite alone, but its still never as fun as quite a few bad days spent with friends. A good bite with a friend takes the cake.. and the number is relitive! Could be 5 fish could be 100?

I will say this.. I did once get to fish a private pond with one of my best friends in a row boat and caught 125 bass in 4 hours with the biggest well over 6 lbs.. I will never forget that day!

A few years back - I was at Independance. I usually fish with my friend - but this time out he couldnt make it. I went to a certain spot and just simply happenned to be in the right place at the right time. I caught on almost every cast - literally - a 3 to 4 pound bass. I would cast out - and give my artificial one or 2 quick snaps - and it was fish on. I was anchored in one spot - never moved the boat an inch - and this went on for over 2 hours until it finally got dark - and I called it a day. Every thing was released - and I went back the very next day - same bait - same spot - and nothing. Have tried the same spot many times since - and nothing close to that day. I have also had so many other great days with really no fish in the boat - but great weather, great company, a good cigar and lots of casts....those make for a "sucessful day" fishing...

Usually the first 6 weeks and the last 6 weeks of the fishing season I spend fishing alone, To cold for some of my partners or kids are in school. I have many good days but I can't seem to remember any bad days. A good day is seldom made by the number of fish caught but more by the company kept and a few special fish caught or more likely lost. I have had many experiences with friends and I remember that one fish that they caught that made the day..

I'm more of a quality fish than quanity fish guy these days. Sure, I like to get into some numbers, but I'd much rather prefer the tug-tug of one 4-6 lb bass than a bunch of 15"ers.

My best bass numbers day was on a lake in the metro, there had been a foot of rain a few days before. The lake I was fishing now had a decent little creek flowing into it where there hadn't been one before. So I made a cast there, bass on, another cast another bass. So I started keeping track, 37 casts in a row, 37 largemouths. Oh yea, I was using a tiny Rebel crawfish, and every bass was a clone of each other, they were 5" long. grin.gif

**3 years ago I was up on Eagle Lake in Canada and I caught 5 fish that totaled 180 inches in one outing. That's a 36" average. And that's not counting all the Walleyes I caught that day. 2 Muskies and 3 big Northerns.

I've been also blessed with some great (and not so great) Bass fishing.

But as everyone else says, and I agree, time on the water is a wonderful thing no matter how the bite is!

I'd have to agree with the sentiment that it has a lot to do with the company kept. I've had two great days by myself, one was numbers where I quit counting with 58 and about a 2 pound average, the other was 4 fish over 4 pounds in 45 minutes on the water (quick trip before work one morning). However, my best outing ever was with a friend when we put together the kind of pattern that is always talked about on fishing shows and in magazines. That day we had it down to a science...keep the boat over 18 feet of water, chartruese/green/white spinner with one silver willow leaf and one gold willow leaf, full length cast with quick retrieve was a bass, half to three quarters length cast with slower retrieve was a northern. That day was special becuase the two of us worked together to really pick apart what the fish were looking for, and together we were handsomely rewarded with an excellent quantity and quality of fish.

SLP,

While you got a few answers here, and they are all right on about the company you keep, I don't think anyone answered your question. From the end of may (after opener) until about the 4th of July, for two people in a boat fishing for an average 6-7 hours 100+ fish is not uncommon at all. At that time of year, shallow water fish are the key, and if you know what you're doing, then 50 bass apiece is absolutely doable.

Those numbers might be true, but not everyone is equal in the original question that was asked. So what you know (is a lot about bass fishing) vs. what I know (not enough grin.gif) vs. what someone that doesn't know a thing, then 100 fish day wouldn't even happen for me or this someone else.

Numbers are awesome because they keep a guy interested, but what I find is the quality of fish really gets me going! Last year was my 1st bass opener and we did get into some real quality fish. Cast after cast we had 3-4lb bass all afternoon long! Phenominal grin.gif

What I can tell you is that

Capt,

That wasn't a derogatory statement in any way, nor was it personal to anyone. It was just meant to imply that a knowledgeable Bass angler should be able to achieve those kind of numbers.

Ole-

This isnt in touch with the thread here - but I noticed you have fished Eagle Lake inOntario. I am going there in June and was wondering if you knew the lake at all (big lake!!) or had any suggestions. we are going to south shore lodge. I believe it islocated kind of toward the South side of Eagel - not as far south as Osborne bay and it is also toward the west side of the lake. Anyway, any input would be appreciated. Maybe I could even leave you my e-mail if you see this post.....thanks!

Well, I don't fish for bass much, and my techniques are basically, crankbaits, spinners, and topwaters, (no confidence in plastics yet) Me and buddy of mine managed to catch 22 bass one day in about 3 hours, that would be what I would call a great outing. But there is more to it than catching fish.....

I truely agree with that statement. My post was to make sure that people didn't get the idea that bass fishing could be that easy and then come back and wonder what the heck we were talking about after a tough day on the water.

I would say about 20 years ago I did a fly in fishing trip to a Canadian lake and in a small bay not a half mile from our cabin in two afternoons I caught over 150 small mouth on a top water bite by myself. A week later again by myself where the Cloquet dumps into the St. Louis I caught 5 sm on 6 casts off the same rock in the river with the biggest being 4.5#'s I rate them both as excellent days.

On of mine was last year on crystal lake off the fishing dock. There was a bunch of guys fishing with suckers of the end of the dock, I walk down and start pitching a green scum frog about 5 feet from shore (splash) fish on, with the sound of the fish hitting the surface one guy fell off his bucket. 3.5 lds fish, change lures to a buzzbait to the other side of the dock, (splash) fish on, 5 lds, hold up to all to see and then leave to head home. The faces on those guys was sweet. Best day ever in 20 mins of fishing.
