Bucket Back Syndrome

Dan Thiem

Recommended Posts

I found out from my doctor, (Dr. Fatwallet) that I suffer from a pain that only ice fisherman can get. It's called bucket back syndrome. Sitting on an upside down bucket reaching to the ice all day long. Almost everything we do when we ice fish has some amount of leaning over the ice hole. If you have ever sat and fiddled with a underwater viewing system, then you know what I'm talking about. All weekend on the ice and my back feels like I went 3 rounds in the U.F.C. I have a new respect for a roofer that does that leaning over all day every day.

Now, who else is suffering from B.B.S.?

Hummm, if I ice fish a lot more then I can develop BBS and then apply for disability and then I can fish more. Might work.

Seriously, there is an effect of the rim of the bucket pressing on lots of nerves and such and that can give you leg problems and also the posture can give you a back problem too. For my Otter house, I use a wooden folding chair which looks kind of odd when setting up but works pretty good. For my Fish Trap I use the seats that come with it and those work pretty good too. I do usually end up with some achiness after fishing, but attribute that to being in need of more general exercise and toning combined with some poor posture.

About 4 years ago I had a wicked case of tendinitis in my right arm. The doctor asked me to show him how I hold a rod ice fishing, and then showed me a better way to hold it. That, a forearm wrap, some stretching exercises, and pain relievers have kept it fairly well in check since.

I always take my hunting bucket with me when I go out. I can fill it wilh thermos, lunch, beer, whatever and dont have to worry that stuff falling out. It is the square one with the back rest. Just to lean back every now and again and rest a moment seems to make the back ache less. Who an I kidding, my fishing luck allows me to lean back and rest quite a bit! Take care and N Joy the Hunt././Jimbo

you guys remember these things. The Butt Bridge for you otter style houses. Here is the link to the patterns. I have yet to make one of these since I have a set up in my house that is comfortable for me but he is an idea to help avoid bucket butt.

Kneeling again, eh, Deitz. So what did you do wrong this time? And does all the knee work mean you are hairy where you should be sitting?

Now that is funny grin.gif

I have built four Butt Bridges and they work great for bucket butt. Everytime I have a new guy fishing in my house they comment how comfy the seats are.

Grebe- thats why I posted that. The UFC has turned into one of my favorite things to watch.

I can't wait for Liddel/Couture III and also for Matt Hughes & Royce Gracie. Those are gonna be sweet and I might actually have to pony up for PPV to watch those fights. Pride fighting is also pretty cool too.

I've got to admit that I'm truly impressed when I fight ends in 15 seconds or less. That one guy got caught with a flying knee to the chin and he went to sleep just like that. Awesome!

I love it when Joe Rogan says, "He just got Rocked!!"

Awright, how can we wind this into fishing? Okay, I was talking to a friend of mine while out fishing and since the fishing was slow, sniffers and no biters the talk turned to UFC fighting. We figured we would jaw for a bit until the fish started hitting...And away we went!

Hanson, is that chit the real deal, or what? Did you catch that Canadian guy with the multi-colored hair? He is #2 in his weight class next to George (Rush) St. Pierre...they might want to rethink that rating! That other guy put him to sleep, flat on his face with one poke, in 11 seconds! "Hey, I think you have a bite on that hole over there?" Nope.

How about that dude that tangled with Drew Fickett? Fickett is a good fighter and that wild child worked him over A.S.A.P., threw him around like a bag of packing peanuts and done him in with a choke in a matter of seconds.

"Did I see that bobber quiver?" Nope.

As far as Gracie goes....I think Hughes will eat his lunch, no problem....how old is he, about 45? He looks dam good for as old as he is and as many scraps as he has been in! He looked younger then Huges and he is about 20 years older!

But, he walked kind of stiff and jerky and I don't think how young he looks is going to make any difference? " Is that the game warden comming out onto the ice?" nope.

Just like all the heavy hitters and big time players, i.e. both Shamrocks, Vito Belfour, etc. etc. they all fall to the young lions, thats the way it is. "Well, I think I had a bite, I best get back to my fishing! Nice talking to ya!" grin.gif

Ugggghh! I wouldn't want to go fishing with him...! That Leben, I can't stand him! What kid of a guy pees on anothers guys bed? On national television yet?

I think they are in the same weight class, I'd like to see him and Diago Sanchez lock em up. Like em or not he can fight, but it isn't gonna break my heart to see him get his bell rung! Not at all! And if he shows up at my fish house, I'm not borrwing him any bait! ( On the other hand if he puts me in a front choke...the bait is his!). grin.gif

Gracie is supposed to be only 39 according to their HSOforum? That guy that beat Fickett is Josh Veneer from the 2nd show.He broke his arm in his first fight and still won but was out of the show because of the injury. He wants to fight Diego Sanchez, but I think he should fight Nick Diaz although they would both be great fights!Hughes will hand Gracie his you know what, just like Rich Franklin did to Shamrock. The sport has grown so much and in order to be in this competition you have to be severely well versed in many ways of fighting,grappling,ect....and in seriously great shape!

I can't believe I'm on FM chatting about UFC. I absolutely hate boxing and can't stand to watch a boxing match. However, I find the UFC very, very interesting. If these guys aren't the most well rounded athletes in the world, I don't who is?

I heard that Gracie was 39 and Hughes is 32. I sure hope to God I'm in the kind of shape Gracie is when I'm 39. Who am I kidding, I'm nowhere close to that now!

I like both Diego Sanchez and Nick Diaz. Those guys have a lot of potential. I love how Nick Diaz is just so quiet and reserved looking and then really brings it.

Just realized that Liddel/Couture III is the night of CrappieTom's Backwater Brawl gathering. I might have to sneak back home early to catch the fight at 9pm on PPV.

JLT...How goes the fishing? Speaking of fishing, I suppose that Gracie could be 39? I know he looked pretty good, but I'm sure the techs aren't gonna send him out in front of the camera with bed head?

When he was at his height, I never gave him much of a chance against some of them guys that looked like they were twice his size, but he always seemed to come out the winner somehow?

With that gia on, he usually looked like a pile of rags in the middle of the ring...next thing you know he would have the other guys arms and legs twisted up like a snarl from a hair brush!

The last match I seen him in, I believe he won, but took a really bad beating doing so, busted ribs, the whole nine...couldn't even jiggle for sunnies!

It doesn't seem like any of them come back? Occassionally, but guys like Tyson, Holmes, Robbinson, Louis, etc., once they are past it, they are past it! They have a hard time putting a waxie on the hook!

UFC and Pride fighting is fairly new, so there is nothing to compare it to except the boxing....Pro (Ha, ha, ha,) wrestling is the only media where a guy 45 to 60 years old, can still do in the young bucks i.e. Rick Flair, the Hulk, etc.

I was up at Mille Lacs the other day and I seen The Nature Boy (Nature Gramps) in a loin cloth out on the flats and he was setting up the house, whilst the Hulkster was running wild trying to incite the fish with some Hulkamania...he's turned red now you know, both of them have? I think they have added alot of food coloring to their diets? Kinda the same way you can dye minnows different colors. Well, back to the fishing! Gotta go.

    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
    • Chef boyardee pizza from the box!
