Hotdogs for ice pike?

When I was young, I use to tie a piece of hot dog on a string and tie the other end to a small stick. I would throw out the piece of hot dog and let it sit for about 2 minutes and then slowly bring it in. It had a crayfish on it just about every single time.

There were several occassions where I had something more than a crayfish on. Humm.. Pike?

We were fishing in Canada a few years back and meet some guys from Canada that gave us some beef heart to tip our jigs with for walleyes. It worked great. Also it was so hard for the eyes to get off even without a barb on the hook you could use the same chunk for hours.

I was enjoying a Slim Jim (aka meat gum) last saturday, and when the gums flavor wore off I tossed it in the hole. On the camera, the sunnies and a crappie would suck it in as it floated down by them, but they would spit it out just as quick. cool.gif

I have done the chicken skin also, let it dry for a few days and use for ice fishing. Hot dogs work great on the river for rough fish, just put on a piece and a sinker, park on shore, cast out, let sink ( I do this in the no wake zones) hurry up and wait, the kids love it. Make sure you get skin on so it holds to the hook.

I'll post a serious answer to your question. Here in ND many people us hot dogs, half a piece, on a tip up and catch lots of pike. I figure it is a scented bait for them and it keeps a strong odor in colder water. So, yes, definately try using hot dogs. If the pike do not cooperate then at least you can eat the bait grin.gif.

I will try a hotdog suspended for a spearing decoy and let you know how that works out and how the pike approach processed meat. Seriously I am pretty sure it would work due to the shape and color of a hotdog. Based on my observations there will be some days that pike will come in to look at almost anything that is suspended in the water column. Other days, when they are actively feeding, pike will charge in and hit anything suspended. They usually immediatly drop a wood decoy but I think they would hang on to a hotdog.
