Great topic. I spent several hours on Sunday trying to fill up a couple of cylinders. Ace Hardware in North St. Paul charges the same for refilling as for exchange and that is $19. The Kwik Stop woman didn't want to fill up the tank because it was cold out but they charge $14 for a 20 lb cylinder. Blue Ribbon Bait in Oakdale has a progressive propane price. $6.50 for a 5 lb tank. $8.50 for an 11 lb tank. and $14 for a 20 lb tank. This is completely crazy to me. That guy can charge whatever he wants but I won't be returning to his shop. I would really like to know if there is a place where propane is sold by the pound and not by the tank size. Are there any RV or farm stores near the metro?

If you are looking to have your tank filled at a gas station like SA or something, forget it. They are always "too busy" or they are the only one there and can't leave the store. And never bring a new tank that needs to be purged to an SA, they have no clue what they are supposed to do. For 5 and 11 pounders your only option that I have found is to find and Ace hardware or some other place with knowledgeable people to refill it. For me I have a few spots that have just such people. Mike's L.P. gas in Maplewood or Volvo Rents in Lino Lakes on Lake Drive. Not sure what I paid last year, but dealing with someone who knows what is going on is worth it. Exchange is they way to go otherwise.
