Angel Eyes/Angel Eye JRs?

Recommended Posts

I was thinking about ordering a card of these, but don't know what the best size to get would be. I will be buying these almost exclusively for walleyes. If they catch a perch or crappie now and then fine, but I'm not really buying them for that.

I have never seen these is person, so I don't know how big each size is. Will the JRs be a little on the small size for walleyes, or not really? If the smaller size will catch just as many walleyes as the larger size, along with crappies and perch, then I will buy those. If I should expect the Angel Eyes to catch more walleyes, then I will go with those.

All of my walleyes fishing in on Wisconsin lakes, where the majority of fish are 12-18 inches, but 20+ to 30 inch fish are possible.

Also, if I decide on the regular Angel Eyes, where can I find them. I've only been able to find the Jrs on this site.

Thanks for any help!

I don't see the original AE's on the HSOforum for sale.

Personally, the AE Jr's have caught just about the same amount of walleyes as the original model for myself. The Jr's also catch crappies, perch, etc.. where the originals won't, so you have multi-use lures with the Jrs if you decide to target those.

You can choose between the glow card of AE Jr's or the non-glow card. They all work great, but glow has it's place on clear lakes at low-light periods and the gold/red Jr works great in stained waters.

The Jr's are a great little size for walleyes! Crappies too!

I have the regular Angel Eye's as well and don't use them as often. When I do, its on a lake such as Lake of the Woods that has the ability to kick out serious sized walleyes. The regular Angel Eye is a decent 3" long spoon.

Hey Gill Man, Both sizes of these you are going to want to use Walleye fishing. I'm up here on Minnesota's Lake of the Woods and my staple go to spoon is the AEjr, it is my very favorite. The AEjr will get eyes when the bite is 'on' good, and work'em right and they get fish even when the bite is way 'off' too, and all moods inbetween.

The big Walleye eat 'em up small as they may seem. I've got some dandies on 'em, as well as some weeee 3-4 inchers too!

If I could only have 1 lure all winter on LOTW, and I needed to eat fish all winter, that AEjr would be my pick! I do feel that strongly on these puppies.

We have talked about fishing these spoons often over the past few years on LOTW down on that forum. In fact 4 years ago I typed a general LOTW winter fishing info post which we have pinned there for awhile, again for this years early season inquirees. In that 4 year old post I also mentioned these AEjr's as my favorite spoon up here.

If you want to spend the time you could use the search feature on the LOTW forum and find ton's of info regarding opinions of, and tips for using them and such.

WARNING; You could be reading for quite awhile!

Gill Man,

You are looking or the Angel Eye Jr. This will provide you with walleye as well as crappie. For some guys they like the Angel Eye Minnow which is the larger of the two. Tip the Jr's with either a full minnow or I just use the minnow head.

Good Luck.

I bought a card of the glow AE jrs and I replaced the hooks with #8 Mustad Triplegrip hooks. I was told that this might affect the lure's action. If it does, no one has told the fish. I also replaced the split rings with a smaller size to keep them from hanging up on the edge of the lure. I had split rings flying all over the room. Its not a job for people with big fingers. My sons were under the impression that these lures were free samples so I may have to restock in the near future. They feel that way about all my fishing tackle. grin.gif

Ok for all you angel eye and glow devil guys - if you could buy a card of one or the other, which would it be for perch, crappie, and eyes? I'm leaning towards the 1/8 glow devils. Unfortunately, that money tree in the backyard never did take off, so funding is limited. I guess the new LX-3, Otter Den, and 2 up longtrack snowmobile might have had something to do with that...

augernaut-

I think that is a good choice- the 1/8oz Go-Devils. I really like the perch color, chartreuse/green, and glow reds. I fish the Go-Devils alot more because they are a faster lure to fish. They drop faster because of the shape.

The Angel Eye, Jrs flutter a lot more and take time to get down to the bottom.

That fluttering motion definitely has its advantages. For one, if you let them flutter down on a slack line, you can get them to move quite a distance horizontally out from your hole.

Hopping them back along the bottom to a point directly down from you can be a fish catching technique at times.

I think the Angel Eye Jr. is the best all around to have. I prefer the pink glow and the gold. Some days it seems I can do no wrong with the eyes and then other days no luck at all. I can't figure out just what I am doing wrong. Usually have the most luck letting glide sideways and then bring it back in with short jirks.

Raven,

One of the first things that I tell people when they are having problems using the Angel Eyes is to not over fish them. Because they are so light and because of the body design it is very easy to fish them to aggressively at times. Some days you can not fish them to aggressively but on other days they want the action that this lure produces but they want it more subtle.

When using these I start out with allowing this lure to drop down without allowing any tension to hinder that fall. The Angel Eye will go down the hole in a horizontal direction. Watch your line as often times the fish will hit this lure on the way down. If not, once it hits the bottom I try to slide it along the bottom until it is directly below my hole. At that time I will then lift it up approximately 2-6" off the bottom and just pause. If there is no bite I start working it up using twitching, pause, twitch, raise up a foot, pause, twitch, and so on. Often times if I see a fish on the locator I will also keep raising, while twitching, it up until that fish hits. If the fish quits coming up with it I will go back down to just above him and do the “death quiver” such as your minnow does when he knows he is having a bad day and is about to be eaten.

Great advise Jeff, I too will work the bait up often, its important to know that fish will often feed up. If you can bring that fish off the bottom you will have a much better chance of getting it to hit. As I stated before, the Angle eye Jr. is one of my go to lures for winter.

You're getting me excited man! LX-3, jigging spoon, and LOW walleyes and you have the ultimate little game of cat & mouse on your flasher screen.

Ohhh... Here he comes.... 3' up, 4', 5', 6', WHAM!!!

I too will vote for the JR's just because of their verstilty with fishing other species of fish. I would recommend buying a card of AE's vs. driving around the area in search of the single packs. More is better in my tackle box grin.gif

Though my buddy bought the original (larger) AE's and fished the gold color exclusively on a few trips on LOTW a few years back and the saugers and eyes took a liking to that lure.

With that said, I still like the options you have fishing various species with the JR's than you do the larger lures.

I started out with the juniors and had good luck with them fishing walleye, perch, and crappie. The winter before last I decided to try the big ones, they look so big I was kind of leary of them but they worked great also. I have caught my largest perch (1pound 15 ounces) and also the largest northern I have caught through the ice(14.5 lbs. on light line) using the hammered gold and red large angel eye. I am of the opinion that you might increase the chance of catching larger fish with the larger lure. Either way you can't go wrong.

Thanks for all the good information guys! While snooping around my local Scheels and Gander Mountain, I have found a couple of the larger Angel Eyes, so I picked up a few. So now maybe I'll have to order a card of the Juniors. It doesn't sound like I would be doing myself any wrong by using them!

If anyone else has more to say feel free to chime in!
