DNR took our deer.

My younger brother went out last Friday and shot a little spike with his bow but it ran into a rufugee area. He and my older brother went and got two conservation officers and tried to track the deer down but never found him. The officers then said that if we were going to come back and look for him don't bring any guns or archery. So the next day we went back out there and searched again but without luck. The following morning my brother went and hunted for about 3 hours in his stand and saw a hiker poke his stick at something by the road. My brother then went to check it out and there it was the head of the spike he shot a couple days ago. Only him my older brother and the conservation officers knew about the deer in the refugee area. It would have been his first deer with his bow and someone had to ruin it. Oh well there's about a month and a half left hopefully it was for the better.

I understand that only you guys & the DNR officers new about the deer, but couldn't someone else have stumbled onto it & took it? Why would it have to be the CO's? It sure seems like there certainly could have been someone trespassing in the refuge that found it.

ok then why would the CO take your deer but leave the head?? Just a thought...You did say it is a refuge..people can still walk through the refuge I would imagine...Bad deal but at least it didn't go to waste!! Sounds like someone found a treat on the trail....Hopefully next time you can locate the kill before the scavengers do!!! wink.gif

I agree with Ozzie, you've got no proof that the DNR cut the head off your deer and took the body. In fact it sounds like someone took the deer and probably cut the head to try and claim it as a doe.

Maybe I should take the other side and say you must've found your deer and cut the head off and now you're lying to cover it up. Does that seem any more likely than the same CO's that helped you look for your deer came back to steal it without the head?!?

This thread should be deleted.

If I knew I killed a deer and failed to find it, I would consider my hunt done, unless I had bonus tags. If I ever fail to retrieve a duck of pheasant (very rare, thankfully) I count that bird towards my bag.

Maybe it was a crazy deer head collecting cult in the area, I'd get out fast! grin.gif

I'm glad everyone sees the outragous nature of this accusation and realizes it make NO SENSE!!

I would like to thank the 2 CO's for stopping to help some young hunters locate a deer they shot. You can't always find them all, but a well placed shot ups your chances.
