2005 1st Weekend Deer Season Results

Recommended Posts

I have a typical 11 pointer that was shot up north by my great grandpa back in the late 60s and was around 190" class. I am planning on getting a cape and then put the antlers on for a shoulder mount after taking my taxidermy class out west in Montana next fall. Thats a big deer... was it a typical or Non?

Had a very good weekend. I shot this guy opening morning @10:45. 12point, 220lbs dressed. I put a doe urine scent wick out, he came walking right to it. Shot him quartering toward me at 20 yards. Friend I was with shot a button Sunday morning, and I shot a button Monday morning. Lots of deer around and harvested (Hackensack area). Was a great weekend.

Hunted around Litchfield. 2 guys ended up with one nice 9 pt. Saw a couple more but didn't get shots at anything else. They were not moving very well last weekend but a few more cornfields were taken down this week so we will try it again next weekend. I will post a picture if I can find out how. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

We hunt in a Northern MN state forest. Nothing real big, but a very successful hunt nonetheless. I had a first on opening day, I had a doe coming straight at my stand and dropped her with one shot. I had a feeling so I stayed put in my stand. Sure enough within about a minute I started hearing grunting coming from the thick cover the doe had come out of and here comes a buck! I shot him and he dropped about 20 yards behind the doe! Talk about being psyched!! smile.gif I filled my buck tag and my bonus tag all in about a 4 minute span! The buck wasn't big but nobody in my hunting party had ever bagged a buck and a doe together like that so it was pretty cool! We party hunt so I had the opportunity to hunt again and bagged another small 6 pt on Monday. I could have shot another one on Sunday but when I climbed into my stand I forgot to re-load the chamber of my gun and you guessed it "Click"! That's OK though because he'll be back next year and a little bigger. Pretty good for hunting on state land I would say.

The 190 1/4" gross scored buck we found was typical but not quite symetric. 12 1/2" max tine length. I'd post pics if I had a server to post them from but I don't... We haven't scored the 8 pt that I shot but it should be 120-130. My personal best.

Was ground zero around me opening morning. I'm betting 5 deer were shot within 250 yards of me in a one hour period. Had me hugging the tree a little bit.

Watched a fawn and doe for quite a while with a nicer buck just working his way out of some thick stuff. dad was one of the guys who shot and he took a nice doe - unfortunately it was right as I was sighting on the buck and he was close enough to me that they spooked back into the thick stuff. Won't try to force one through brush so I let them walk.

Guy on the ridge north of me shot a bit after that so I imagine he dropped it.

Finally decided to take a couple smaller ones after passing on some deer when I realized how many guys were around me and cutting me off. Will hopefully be up in the woods this weekend for a day when there's less pressure in my immediate area.

We were really trying to get my grandpa a last deer, but to be honest I watched one or two head past his stand and in the end he said 'there aren't any deer in there just some birds and squirrels' - too bad. Tough when the hearing aid goes out in the woods.

On a funny note, he ripped one in his stand that both my dad and I heard blush.gif - sounded like a gun shot. I actually had to do a quick visual on him to make sure he hadn't knocked himself out of the tree grin.gif

Thanks BRK. Ya, it was. when I first saw him, I thought it was a nice eight. Not until aftr I shot and saw him take off did I see that it was much bigger. He went to the taxidermist this morning.

What a rush!!

well 6 of us and only one doe to show for the opening weekend that was at the rum river state forest area 157. during the week we headed to carlos avery and nothing either I can say i havent even seen a deer in a total of 7 days hunting but i can also say its been the best hunting ever have spent some decent time observing the wildlife and everything. I just hope to get a doe to put in the freezer. Im not looking for a Trophy buck or bucks ill settle for meat in the freezer I would probably let small bucks walk but if a monster came by id take him in a heart beat. Maybe today Saturday it will pick up a bit at least thats what im hoping for. The most important thing this weekend is actually to get my little brother to take a deer ANY deer since its his first time hunting. that would make it even more worth it this year. Its funny but the only person in our party that doesnt care for scents, doesnt care for calls, doesnt care for scent elimination or control is the one that has seen 3 does and 1 buck....goes to show you

Thanks for posting the pics bigba$$! That darn 12pt my buddy found in our woods stole all the attention from what was the biggest buck I've personally harvested... it sure makes mine look small in the photos. I scored my rack at 131 2/8 gross and 121 6/8 net. R g2 = 11 2/8" and L g3 = 11"
