I've been using the aurora headlamp for 2 years know. It has 3 leds with five functions. 3 light intesity modes, and two flashing modes. There is plenty of light on the lowest setting with more than enough on the highest setting. Its still on its original 3 AAA batteries.

REI Has a great headlamp. It is called Black Diamond. They have 4 or 5 LEDS, three light intensities and one flashing, and the unit is waterproof/resistant(not sure on which), and runs for about thirty dollars. I wouldn't buy anything else!! That's my two cents.

I use the Princton-tec Aurora. Light, waterproof, and have a lifetime warrenty. Not as much light as a 3 D-cell mag light, but more then enough for ice fishing and getting in and out of the woods when hunting. Not enough light to follow a light bloodtrail.....You need big lights for that.

I have a Princeton Tec that I picked up at Gander Mt for about $20. It has 3 LED's and has an emergency flash setting. Supplies plenty of light. Batteries last a long time, but will slowly start to dim. I use the light all year for camping, around the house, night fishing, ice fishing, night XC skiing, reading at night, etc. I change 3 AAA's three or four times a year. I've been very satisfied with this light.

Another chip in for the PrinceTech Aurora LED head light. I had gotten a Coleman Northstar propane lantern for Christmas. The year after that, I got the headlight.

The lantern stays at home all the time, I think it's still collecting dust up on the shelf.

I have 3 of them too,

Ray o vac...$15...3 leds, 1 red & 1 adj. beam krypton bulb. I really like this one and hope I can find it again in all our boxes of moved stuff. AAA's. Totally adjustable. I see them at Fleet Farm now.

A 19 led one I just got off hsolist from Hong Kong for $4.56 & $10 shipping. 1 on or 7 on or 19 on or flashing! AAA's.

A 3 led "no brand" one with a 3 AA battery pack on back as a gift from my brother in law....Thanks Jon! very cool too! lasts forever!

I agree with jig n' jerk. I have a BlackDiamond from REI, it is light weight and gives enough light to tie on a panfish jig. If there is ambient light it does not "seem" to work well but if it is dark it does the job.

I have had a lot of headlamps. Probably at least one from just about every brand out there.

THe brightest one I have or had was the Princton Tech Predator. Its a crypton bulb model with 4 AA's. It is on the heavy side.

Another favorite is the Ray-o-Vac one you get at Walmart.

One Red LED, two white and the regular bulb. Lightweight and the Red and White LEDs give off enough light for in the shak or in the boat. The regular bulb will cast light a long distance.

My all time favorite has got to be the Cats Eye model. This thing has 3 LEDs and clips to the bill of your cap. If you wear a cap, this is the most comfortable and usefull head lamp. It gives off lots of light and even throws light a decent distance. The only draw back to this lamp is that it takes 4 watch batteries at $2.50 to $3.00 a pop. Thats $10 to $12 to power the thing up. It will last about half a dozen trips though. It uses more power than other LEDs but I think its well worth the comfort and the amount of light you get.

I've been searching for something different (LED lanterns to hand inside the portable), and ran across Gerber brand LED headlamps, from the same folks who make Gerber hunting and tactical knives.

In addition to a kick-butt hunting headlamp with huge white LED, and green and red task lights to boot, they have a 3-oversize LED compact headlamp that has a single band OR can clip onto the bill of your cap. It's called the Gerber Triode. It takes only one AAA battery!

They have some of the best LED outdoors sport lighting I've found. I'm thinking of replacing my headlamp and picking up a compact LED lantern for the portable. Check them out, just do a search for "Gerber knives" on google.

I currently have the same Wal-Mart Eenrgizer 2-white, one-red LED mentioned above, and it works good, and it's a battery miser. It's just not as bright as I would like it to be. It's enough to tie a lure or land a fish, but you have to keep pinwheeling your head around cause the beam is focussed.

J.R.'s has come out with a new headlamp this year it is a 9 led krypton headlamp. It can be used with 3,6 or 9 of the bulbs. It takes 3 AAA batteries and is water resistant. It is one of the brightest I've seen for the money $14.95. Good luck.

As mentioned before the Cat Eyes have my vote. I started using them last winter and found that they work very well. You can put them on the brim of your hat and not even know they are there until you need the light.

for the guys that have used the LED lanterns, have you found any that have internal rechargable batteries? Ive been looking on hsolist for ideas and have found them with an average of 12-15 LEDS up to one that has 100 LEDs, there is a 30 LED one claims 400 hours on 4-Dcell batteries( im sure it is measured on the low setting 15 LEDs). do they really last that long on just D cell batteries?

For what it's worth;

I use a black diamond led headlamp, they don't make the same one anymore, but they have another model just like it. It has a so-called superbright led in the center and two normal led's on each side of the main led. I'm pleased with it. 3 AAA batteries.

I also just picked up a Brunton Glorb led lantern. It runs on four AA's. It either has a one led setting or all four leds setting. It works nice for the tent, and I think it'll do just fine in my one-man portable. The only place I've seen it is Hoigards in St. Louis Park. It's the size of a normal one candle candle lantern. 250 hrs battery life on the one led setting.
