North Dakota Fighting Sioux (name the new team name)

So it seems like Ralph Engelstadt will be rolling in his grave as he hears the news the NCAA just dropped down.

"The NCAA staff review committee has retained the University of North Dakota on the list of colleges and universities subject to restrictions on the use of Native American mascots, names and imagery at NCAA championships.

"In its review of the particular circumstances regarding the University of North Dakota, the NCAA staff review committee noted the university did not have the support of the three federally recognized Sioux tribes of North Dakota. One primary, but not exclusive, consideration in the review process is documentation that a 'namesake' tribe has formally approved of the use of the mascot, name and imagery by the institution.

"Information the NCAA received from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe clearly indicates both tribes oppose the university's use of the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and imagery. Several requests made by the NCAA to the Spirit Lake Tribe for clarification on its position went unanswered. Additionally, the Board of Directors of the United Tribes of North Dakota, with representatives of the five federally recognized tribes with a presence in the state, including the three Sioux tribes, unanimously passed a resolution supporting the NCAA decision to ban the use of Native American mascots, nicknames and imagery at NCAA championships.

"Although the University of North Dakota maintained that its logo and nickname are used with consummate respect, the position of the namesake tribes and those affected by the hostile or abusive environment that the nickname and logo create take precedence. The decision of a namesake sovereign tribe, regarding when and how its name and imagery can be used, must be respected even when others may not agree.

"However, the university will be allowed to host the Men's Division I Ice Hockey Championship, West regional, on March 24-25, 2006 at Ralph Engelstad Arena without altering its current contract. This decision was made because it is not reasonable to cover up or remove all of the Native American imagery in the arena, and the restriction was adopted by the Executive Committee after the contract was awarded to the university. The University of North Dakota will be restricted from hosting future championships in that arena.

"The NCAA position on the use of Native American mascots, names and imagery has not changed, and the NCAA remains committed to ensuring an atmosphere of respect and sensitivity for all who participate in and attend our championships.

"The University of North Dakota can file an appeal with the NCAA Executive Committee. This appeal must be submitted in writing. Requests for reviews from other institutions will be handled on a case-by-case basis."

My vote is for calling them the North Dakota Fighting Farmers.

Whatcha think? grin.gif

I am no big North Dakota fan, but I think this is just plain hooey.

Maybe the North Dakota Alumni and others, should stay away from the Spirit Lake Casino.

What about all the schools that have Devils in their nick names.

But, it looks like UND will have to go back to name "Flickertails" again, just to make some radical happy. tongue.giftongue.gifconfused.gif

How about

[careful!]

There, now someone has something to complain about.

What a bunch of dump.

Being of Scandanavian decent I officially request the Vikings change their name as it offends me. Sounds pretty f-ng lame when a white guy says it doesn't it!!

Talk about too far.

Do the Vikings change their name so no good norweigan folk get offended?

Do the Gophers change names as to not torque off the local rodent population?

Do the Florida State Seminoles, who have since the dawn of time had a very good relationship with the Seminole tribes have to change their name?

As to not offend anyone in the steam profession, do I have to change my user name?

Talk about lame. Way lame. What have we become?

I am soooo sick of this PC talk! I’m a purebred Norwegian and I don’t complain about the Vikings either. I think these names should be an honor to the people or tribes. I noticed that any names related to white history aren’t even mentioned. What about the Trojan’s, Texans, or Cowboys? Shouldn’t that be changed as well? A Warrior, or Brave is something to be respected. It’s not derogatory in my opinion.

My very simple rule on right and wrong is this: Twist whatever the name or situation is around to include Caucasians, and see if it is racist. Is BET (Black Entertainment Television), NAACP, or the United Negro College Fund racist? You bet it is. Could you imagine the uproar if someone started a WET station or United Caucasian College Fund? That being said, I do think that the Washington Redskins should change their name. I do feel that is derogatory. I wouldn’t want a football team named the White Boys. Besides, if they were all white, they probably would never win a game. Well, I have to go because my dog is complaining about St. Cloud State’s mascot.

I think the UND Hockey team, should be called The Brave.

THEN THEY WOULD GET THE LAST WORDS OF THE NATIONAL ANTHEM RIGHT. confused.gifblush.gifgrin.gif

Also, the Vikings, should be called the Possums.

They play dead at home and get killed on the road. mad.gifblush.gifconfused.gif

I have always thought this too. I did see an article a year or so ago about a kid at a college in Maine or somewhere up in the NE that tried to start a scholarship for white people only. Needless to say he did not succeed.

The whole name change (IMHO) is a joke, a reflection of today's PC society, beaurocracy and hypocracy. A handful of tribal spokesmen are against the name, while a majority of tribal members either feel positive towards the name or are neutral. Most say they feel proud of the Fighting Sioux name and it gives their tribe/heritage a positive identity in a melting pot society. Heck, the new logo was created by a Native Amercian student at UND.

I'm sure they'll have to change their name, but, in my opinion, it's a sad reflection on part of our society. Plus, how can derogatory names like the "Redskins" still be used, too?

One more tidbit I found...

There is plenty more legal action forthcoming before you see “North Dakota Flickertails” sweaters for sale inside Ralph Englestad Arena. When the Peace Garden State’s favorite casino owner generously plunked down $100 million for marble floors, etched glass Indian heads and a hot tub the size of Devils Lake, he would have been wise to set aside a few bucks for a nickname legal defense fund. Not since General Custer had a post in the territory has the Sioux name been as threatened as the NCAA makes an all-out effort to rid college sports of nicknames it deems “hostile and abusive.” The school’s bid to host the 2006 NCAA West Regional got a reprieve from the original thought that they’d be forced to cover up the roughly 4,000 Indian head logos inside the building. After March, the future of the nickname is sure to be settled in a courtroom somewhere. Some advocate proactively reverting to Flickertails, which was the school’s athletic nickname in the early 1900s. A dictionary defines flickertail as another name for a prairie ground squirrel, similar to a gopher, but smaller. That nickname sounds like more than most Golden Gopher-hating North Dakotans could stomach.
