Ice Fishing Toys - What Do You Bring Out on the Ice?

I can't believe you guys haven't heard of Buck's teaching. Most of what is out there now is either a knock off of him or in addition to what he taught. (I am not an expert - all I did was watch the old Don Dixon videos).

Have you guys heard of the longest, sharpest, narrowest point into the deepest water in that area of the lake??? (may be off a little)

I highly recommend them to anyone. You'll definitely notice how some of the current day writers "borrow" Buck's stuff.

Matt, the videos will answer your questions. Buck has some spoonplugging books out, but I have never read them to see exactly what is covered in them.

I have to watch my tapes again, but I'll wait till winter.

Generally when referring to structure and fishing it is a constant feature of the bottom by Buck Perry's definition. It is just that, Buck Perry's definition to clarify what he wrote. When referring to cover it is generally an area that fish or other living creatures hide in.

That being said when people say structure they mean a lot of things beyond what is said in the sentence above. So we just have to take it in context. If you look up structure in the dictionary it is more broad based than Buck's definition.

Speeking of structure, My lakemaster chip just arrived for my Ifinder H20.... WOW..... I've heared of rain dances, how about an ICE dance. I can't wait to hit the lake with this new toy. I'll bet the Walleyes are scared allready.

I think of "Structure" as being any thing not relitave to bottom content. If your fishing a mud flat and find a small change in bottom hardness I would call it structure, or a weedline on the edge of a sand flat, structure as well. As far as the term "Cover"... cover in my brain is processed as anything fish are holding in, on, or around. Docks, rocks, trees, stumps, or even weeds. so should it be known as "Cover Structure"??? I guess the only thing I can think of as not realy being cover would be a flat surface/bottom... Suspended fish have no cover, but can you think of what you would call a thermal line??? cover or structure??? The terms are what you process them as and what another man calls a rock pile some might say its a bar or sunken island... cover, structure, or cover structure it dont matter I call all of them FAD's (Fish. Attracting. Devices.) wink.gif

Terms are what you process them as, but there are correct definitions. Buck Perry was the first to define the terms structure and cover as related to fishing. Some fisherpeople incorrectly use the terms interchangeably due to ignorance (not knowing the definitions). Dictionary definitions are much more broad.

Definitions can change over time, but a clearly defined word or term can help communicate thoughts and ideas more effectively.

I hope this doesn't sound too preachy. crazy.gif

Kev, are you still interested in hunting that "special spot"? I take it that you're still guiding for Steve's grouse and woodcock hunters. Anyway, drop me a line. I'm free this Saturday and Sunday. Monday's out as a potential new partner for the practice will be in town. I'm free the following weekend (Friday thru Monday) at this time. Jim Jurries (from Michigan) called me on his way back home. Mentioned that he and Bob Bates had a great hunt. He just wanted to "touch base" and let me know that the Mullin/Flanegan group were thinking of me.

DocKehr, I'll call you tonight. or shoot you an E-mail.

Just a heads up, I'm not going to make it this weekend, a friend of mine has invited me back to his place for waterfoul, he has permission for about 1000 acres of private land west of Parkers Prairie and there has been clouds of ducks and geese in a corn feild that was chopped off and is now flooded, as for the following weekend, I'm open for that, have you talked to Micky??? He can fill you in.I had a blast with Jim and Bob, the last day we hunted we moved 22 grouse and 28 woodcock, Jim shot a grouse and he got to see the bennifits of a good tracking dog, he offered to buy my german short hair before he left.

TERMS: Call them whatever, they are all FAD's to me. Fish are where you find them and thats where I'll be, cover or structure grin.gif I do stand corected. Thanks for the grammer lesson. blush.gif I AiNt Got No CoLage edUcation, But I cAn sNiff Out Dem dar fishes LiKe an olD BlooD hounD shocked.gif Just have'n some PHUN!

I started to make a list of what I bring on the ice and the list was getting long and more like a chore so I've decided to list just the toys (things I fiddle with that keep me from actually fishing).

1. b/w TV/radio/flashlight/lamp/thermometer/compass...combo

2. FRS/GMRS radio (not sure if I got those letters right)

3. Si-Tex FL-5 Colormatic

4. Marcum OVS560 (granted, I use the flasher and camera while fishing; I just wanted to mention them).

5. sometimes a Strum Stick (musical instrument) and or a harmonica.

6. Cribbage board and a deck of cards. Dice.

7. A good book or a newspaper (love the crossword puzzles) or both.

8. Binoculars and digital camera.

9. GPS unit

There's a few more things, I'm sure, that take up my fishing time but I can't think of them right now.

As one can tell, I'm easily distracted from fishing, but as Dana Lamb tittled his book..."The Fishing's Only Part of It." grin.gif

Well I primarily fish for panfish and I believe that requires you spend WAYmore money than is necessary on jigs! With that said, here's my toy box...

First I need to tow my Fish Trap Pro around w/ my 500 Arctic Cat Automatic Then load the Trap up w/...

NILS auger w/"6 head

Vexilar FL8 w/dual transducer w/2 Cablela's 12volt batteries for back up

Aqua-Vu Scout underwater camera system

2-41" J.Higgins custom built ultralite rods rigged w/

HT ultralite flyreels w/ drag,3lbs.test Trilene XT Solar line and 2 lbs. fluorocarbon leader

2-43" J.Higgins mediumlite rods rigged w/ Shamano

Sahara 200 FD reels w/ 4lbs.Trilene XT Solar line and 2 lbs. fluorocarbon leader

I carry my rods in a $10.00 gun case from Bass Pro Shops, works great !

I have 5 10" Plano tackle keepers ( I keep'em in a soft sided luchbox!)filled with jigs of every color imaginable.

A Mr.Heater cooker w/ 5 gal. tank

Bass Pro Shops 12v green florescent light

Cabela's LED headlamp w/ blacklight function

4 Motorola FMS 12 mile range radios

6"HT ice scoop w/ chipper handle

A Fuji] digetal camera

My cellphone

extra gas both two stroke mix and straight up unleaded

Bait (of coarse)...spikes,waxworms, sometimes mousees, but I guess I'm not sure what you guys are referring to when you say your using EUROs confused.gif. We're always about 20 years out of touch up here in the Northeast. if anyone cares to drop a hint I'd appreciate it !

Oh let's see..,Ahhh, 2 6 1/2 gal.buckets, rags, extra gloves, snow shovel, goggles, ice cleats, chisel and a whole bunch of other junk that I'm sure I'm forgetting.

It's has always amazed me what you can talk yourself into " NEEDING " to chase them little buggers around ! smirk.gif

Good thing it was a light day huh? wink.gif

In Lake Champlain on the Vermont side we can run 15 lines each. 3 guys...42 tip-ups plus jigging holes....Hardly even warmed the Nils up. grin.gif As a side note...I don't normally run 15 lines. There is no way I can keep up. When salmon fishing, that is another story. Somedays you need that many to locate the fish.

Quote:

A fish is wearing the last pair of sunglasses I wore ice fishing! I wish a golf ball could find the hole as easily as anything dropped in a fish house!

I have fish talking on cell phones, wearing sunglasses, with a laynard full of clippers, pliers and glow lights around there neck. All while trying to figure out the remote for the truck locks. The ice hole is like a magnet for anything you may need or want, try to get a half squished minnow in the hole...never happen. grin.gif
