Senko's vs. Senko look a likes

Instead of purchasing the rings, you can put two wraps of Fire Line or Spider Wire around the Senko (where you desire the hook) tie a knot and you are good to go. I also put the barb/tip of the hook through the Senko slightly. I have a couple of buddies who are not very good at using jigs in the thick weeds so I give them Senko's to drop in the weeds and that works for them.

Guys, I bought a few packs of 4 & 5 inchers in different colors. What's the short story on how to fish them? (I searched...overwhelming amount of data) I always put it away and pull out a jigworm. It's hard to break that habit.

I've played around T-rigged with a 3/0 hook. The lakes I fish are pretty weedy. I know I have to cast it somewhere...but then what? Let it lay? Short twitches, drag & pause? Maybe I'm too impatient! Also, I've only used Transition 8 pound so it's hard to watch the line. What line works for you? How about a Senko 101 (or Senkos for Dummies)?

Thanks for the help....

Chuck,

Fishing with a SENKO will be slow and painful for you if you are use to fishing with a jigworm, spinnerbait or crank. Normally you are fishing spots on the spot with senko's or working very "fishy" looking spots.

I have had great success with a variety of colors in the 5" worm. I typically fish with a 2/0 Gammy hook and fish the senko weedless. THAT is, fishing it so that the hook point is not exposed to the elements. I use 8 pound test, but I just use good old Berkley XL (clear).

Normally I fish the bait under docks, up against reeds or shoreline structures and let the bait sink. Here is where the slow and painful feeling comes in. I cast it out and just let the bait settle or at least I think it has settled to the bottom of the lake. Then I start working it back ever so slowly with raising the rod tip up, just twitching it back. You will feel dead weight or you will see your line moving like a fish has it.

When that happens, set the hook!

I have not fished deeper edges with this because it is a slower way of fishing. BUT put some confidence into it because IT IS AN EFFECTIVE WAY TO CATCH FISH.

Good Luck.

Thanks Captain! That's what I figured. I'm going to try it. I have some shallow spots that just don't work well for jigworms. I'm also going to try it in spots where I've caught some fish on the jigworm but the bite stopped.

I tell ya those Senkos are amazing... but at 60 cents a pop... Sometimes I lose one per fish. I can easily go through 20 or 30 in a day. I KNOW that they manufacture these thinks knowing that they work so well AND break so easily.

With today's technology.. I have know doubt they could come up with a compound with the same pliability and density as a senko.. yet hang on like tire rubber. You could use one all day! They would go out of business or else charge $10.00 per Senko! smile.gif

To save costs.. I just bought two 50 pack of "senkos" for $11.00 each.. the brand is "Voodoo Lures" and they are hand poured.. they look exactly like Senko's but haven't tried them yet. 60 cents a pop vs. 22 cents. I found these on hsolist.

That O-ring trick... for wacky rigs.. does it really help the senko last? Do you miss more fish? And how do you get that little ring on? (And where do you get the rings)

Speaking about Senko's... Anyone have the dies for senko type lures? If you do, did you order them online or is there a place around here that would sell them? Cuz i have a few idears to play around with.

Slyster

That O-ring trick can't impair the hook rate whatsoever.

It can only increase your fish/senko ratio.

Opening weekend this year, I used the super cheap knock offs with an o-ring, and I had some that lasted for well over 10 fish per senko(look alike that is).

You are doing yourself a disfavor by not using the O-ring idea. Especially for those that choose to use the real Senkos.

Yep.. I did see that picture.. but still wonder where you get them and how you put them on. I will reread this thread to see that was discussed... but I don't recall that it was.

hsolist

I bought a 100 pack of the rubber 0-rings for a couple bucks.

Or I have gotten the red split rings to fit the 5 inch senko style baits at Reeds in Brainerd.

I've tried to find either of them at Gander around town, but sad to say Gander just don't cut the mustard with their inventory.....

Putting them on is about as simple as it gets.

Run the o-ring right up the worm to about the midpoint and jam your hook through the worm and through the ring.

Just like the picture shows on page 2 of this thread.(Well the pic does not show the hook through the worm)

I love fishing Senkos and I got tired of paying the big $$ for them so I started to hand pour my own. You can control the sink rate by adding more or less salt. As for durability you can control that too by adding more or less softner. Wacky rig with a split ring is the only way to go if you want to save baits. I've caught up to 8 bass on the same senko using this method.

Tx Big'a$$. wink.gif I guess I didn't realize is was that easy... I was thinking they were tight metal rings that needed a tool or something. I'll be checking hsolist for some bulk packs tonight.

hey.. bassn1.. That would be fun to make your own.. how does one learn how to do that? Where do you get molds and materials? Is this like a meth lab operation Or is it more of a on the stove deal?

Hey Slyster, I'd like to tell ya how but then I'd have another addicted hand pourer on my hands! (lol) It's easy but kind of spendy to get going.Once you start it's hard to stop!! There are a few websites you can check out, my favorite is icicleground.com

I've been keeping an eye on this post - what's up with the Comida's? Have they hit the market yet? Judging from the previous posts - it sounds like there may be a couple of guys on here who have access to these? I've not seen them anywhere yet? I love the Senko's - but they are somewhat pricey. *shrug*

I'm waiting to test those Comida's out too. One of these days they will be available to us little people....

We may need to go undercover and do some covert operations to find these so-called "Comida's". smile.gif

Looks like this is the hot bait eh?

I've been back fishing for two years now & have always targeted panfish. But the "bigger fish syndrome" has hit & today I went out for bass. In 3 hrs was able to get two 14 inchers (CR) and even a bluegill & perch (which was funny as the crank bait was bigger than the fish grin.gif )

Anyways, I'm hooked. It's fun to catch 'em on light equipment.

I'm going to give these a try because when cranking I sure was getting hung in the weeds more than I'd like. I guess they say if you aren't hitting weeds you arent catching fish. (which was the case today)

Hopefully my local bait shop keeps 'em.

To review: I guess you throw em', let them sink, & jig them back?

I would be fishing them um weedless stlye as the lake I goto has good weeds (and big fishes)

(wanted to ask but didnt want to start a new topic: Are bass "good eatin'"?)

Ack. No help guys? smile.gif

Another thing I found interesting was this ( source )

There is only one more thing to remember, but it is the most important: DON'T SET THE HOOK! If you are new to fishing and you haven't learned how to set the hook, good! If you already know how, forget it. When you even suspect there's a fish, just start cranking, slowly and steadily, maintaining slight tension on the line at all times. I know this doesn't sound right, but this rig doesn't look right either!

Either way. I got a 10 pack of watermelon with black & red flake (4 inch) & 2/0 Gammywhatever G-Lock Extra wide gap worm hooks.

I'm going to be throwing these on a 6'6 light rod/reel with 6 lb Fireline. I've caught big bass on this before & trust it.

I have a really good baitcasting setup but really like the fight with the light stuff.

Wish me luck. I'm going in about 6 hrs smile.gif

(edit: I've caught about a 3 lb'er on my light rod, I don't how it'd handle "Big Bubba" if he ever came my way.)

Should I use the baitcaster? I have 8 or 10lb crappy spiderwire mono on it.
