what's better mono lines or braided for bass?

If you start with PowerPro, you'll save yourself a lot of money and time. IMO, hands down the best for most situations. If you have a bunch of specialty rigs, then you may want to look into the various subtleties of mono and fluorocarbons, otherwise PowerPro braid is great (10-20 for spinning, 15 to 65 for Baitcasting).

I love power pro... it is by far the best braid on the market in my opinion! For spinning you can get away with 10lb, but I prefer the new 15lb & 20lb. For baitcasting I use 20lb for everything and 50lb for flipping/slop. You can't go wrong with braid.

Mono can be good in certain situations...however I haven't seen much difference except when using senkos and even then I like the effect braid has on them (slower fall)

I have never had an issue with visibility with power pro when catching fish. If you are concerned about it a little tip is to take a black sharpie and make marks on the line starting from your jig up to 6 feet. It breaks up the line and kind of camoflauges it. The markings will eventually fade but then just do it again.

I'm with Deitz. I fish both with about 3/4 of it being mono. I still use mono for Texas Rigs, all lighter spinning rod apps, cranks, spinner baits, and topwaters.

I really like braid for my slop rods, jig-n-pig rods, dock fishing rod, and buzzbaits.

If I put a mono backing, then it won't spin? Well that would have been good to know. I have been getting so upset over my braided line spinning and I was debating on just throwing it out. I'll have to try the backing. What lb test do you use for that?

you cna use about any test line. if you happen to be changing the mono on one of your reels, this would work too.the problem with braids is that they won't cinch down on it self like mono will. i would atleast put enough on so that you have two layers of mono on before going to the braid. if you have a large capacity spool; then spool more mono on so you use less braid ,like deitz said.

I guess I'll put in my .02 even though it's already been said.

Power Pro is the #1 braid for me. I have 5 combos and 4 have braid.

If the water is clear I'll tie on a mono or FC leader. If I'm fishing slop I don't bother and I tie the braid direct to said froggy.

Yes you have to have mono for backing! That's very important so the braid doesn't slip on the spool. I put it on before with out backing and it sucked. I always learn the hard way.

Last year on my finesse combo I had 6lb P-line. Which was great in most situations, but I did loose a monster smallie (ask Big Mike about that one) and I lost a couple others due to the line breaking or me not managing the drag properly. I bumped it up to 10lb braid and I'll bend the hook before the line will break on a snag now.

Just remember that braid has no stretch, so couple that with the correct action rod for the presentation you have in mind.

As an example, if you had a 100% fiberglass baitcast rod would you put mono on it or braid?

My Answer: A fiberglass rod will have a lot bend so to counter that I'd put on braid and not mono as mono has some stretch. I can expand on this if anyone is interested.

Later,

EBass

I use old mono that i took off and would have thrown away, it works great for backing.

Keep in mind that you can re-use Power Pro. i will respool and the beginning of the new year by taking it off and putting it on "backwards". and after you do that the next year you can use it for ice fishing.

Don't worry about lb test when tying mono to braid. Worry more about diameter. If you have 40lb power pro it has a 10lb diameter, so then you would tie 10lb mono to it to match the diameter for backing. Some use bigger diameters lines, I've just always used the same diameter for both lines. Its really up to you how you want to do it.

Another option for backing is rubber bands...thats what i use. The thick ones that they use to hold broccli together at the grocery store works best.

Using mono for backing works well. I use old braid a lot also for backing. Surgeons knot works great in both cases.

If I'm tieing the braid direct to the reel, I use a small spot of Super Glue to hold the initial wrap in place. Never had any problems.

Power Pro is my favorite.

One situation I really like braid is when fishing plastics weightless on spinning tackle. Have seen my hooking % increase with no stretch braids. Currently using 6/20 PP, will experiment with a flouro leader on some clearer waters, am thinking of 14lb for the leader?
