2005 Turkey Hunting Photo Contest

Recommended Posts

It is truly addicting, isn't it? I joined the Ottertail Lakes Chapter of NWTF as a committee member in about 1996. Couldn't understand why everyone was so gung ho about turkeys. Then I tried it, and have been hooked since. If you want to become a member, just let me know. We have a lot of fun with our banquet and we have a great time with our JAKES event coming up in June.

Chuck:

Great story and bird. Glad to hear how good it is up there too. Addiction isn't even the word......i mean, an addiction can be kicked with therapy. But there is no rehab for turkey hunting. Who would want to?

Glad to hear that you're "off" the wagon like the rest of us!

CPK:

Impressive.

Kudos to you for being a better turkey hunter than most of us who have never had a broken neck.

Looking forward to seeing pics and reading the story from your MN hunt. You're from PI right? If so, my condolences. I'm from rival CF. grin.gif

Friday, May 13, My brother-in-law on the left in the picture) and my brother (on the right) set up the DoubleBull in a field North of Rochester. Had two toms gobbling near us and a lot of hens yelping. About 6:30 am, we had two jakes follow a bearded hen across the field towards our setup. Thought maybe that we'd have a quick end to the season then, but they were on their own path and weren't impressed by the decoys or my calling. Later, more jakes came out into the field and were quickly chased out of the prime area by a mature tom. They tried to come back several times but the tom chased them away each time and the tom never came closer than about 80 yards to us.

About 9:00 am, the land owner entered the field to check on something and it spooked the tom away and pushed the flock of six jakes towards us. I did some soft purrs and clucks on my slate and it caught their interest and they moved up to within 35 yards. It had been raining all morning and the forecast was for high winds and rain through the weekend so we decided to take what was in our laps. Stuck the guns out the windows of the blind and counted to three. Boom! Our season was over. The birds were so wet that they looked like drowned rats.

All three jakes were roughly 15 lbs. One had a six inch beard, one had a four inch and one had a three. We roasted two of the birds on Saturday evening and had a big party. They were delicious!!

Joel, yes, I'm originally from P.I.

Here is my entry, Story to follow in upland forum

25lbs - 11"beard - 1" and 0.75" spurs

I don't have the picts back from my WI bird harvested yesterday (double beard). This is my MN bird and more than likely my best photo.

I shot this turkey near Morton, MN on 5/5/05. I was fortunate to have my kids with me to witness the hunt. This was there first time turkey hunting and they were as excited as I was. They've already asked me if they could go again next year, if I get drawn.

The turkey weighed 20lbs., had a 9" beard, and 3/4" spurs.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
