To bring, or not to bring...across the border to Canada

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty sure smelt has been banned in all forms in Ontario for quite some time, I'm sure Hemlock will comment as well. The concept is that they don't want them spread to their waters I believe....

There are certain parts of Canada that don't allow you to use frozen smelt as bait. I think frozen smelt are allowed in the the Thunder Bay area and west a ways. Anyway this is the way it is written in their game laws. What part of Canada were you in?

Dennis, I called with that question to the Fort Francis border crossing and they said: "No, they are not allowing it in." I said, "Who's not allowing it in?" They said, "The department of Agriculture." OK, I guess that's that. Sorry dude. I've got some tenderloins left from last year if you want some. (Acutually, that's some MN deer in my freezer, oops) blush.gif

Usually we get in line by or before 7:00am, and it's usually not too bad if I remember. Just a few vehicles is all. One year I think we hit it at around 9:00 or 10:00am and it was close to a 45min. wait.

Hey Pikestrike was the traffic patteren any different this week than last? How about the wait times on the sad southbound return trip? That direction has been a lot longer wait the past several years.

This weekend the wait was a bit longer in Intl Falls according to the HSOforum. Into Canada it was already over an hour at 8 AM and cooled off to 30 min at 2 PM. Going the other way, the peak (of 2 hours) was at 1 PM though it was still 90 mins at 2PM.

Items in question:

No potatoes. Canned potatoes are allowed as are frozen hashbrowns, ole's etc. Just not raw, in bag, potatoes.

Beef is allowed. Must be less than 10 pounds.

Does that mean I can bring 10 pounds of dried or jerked beef or a combination?

Also - I have 1/2 pound blocks of 8 & 10 year old cheddar - can I bring that with?

Going to Kasba smirk.gif

On a side note - how buggie is NW Territory in August - should I bring a head net?

Planning a duck hunting trip to Manitoba this Fall. As far as I know noone in our party has any criminal record to worry about. However, I was wondering if there is any way to get "pre-approved" (ie sending in paperwork ahead of time so we and Canada know we are good to go) as to guarantee entry so we don't have to turn back at the border because of some surprise.

Thanks for a great thread Hemlock!

Voyaguer - I took my dad to the NW Sports show in March and picked up a "know before you go" booklet from US Customs booth - their phone number is 877-237-5511. You might want to call and ask that question. As for the booklet, it is not country specific, and gives only shallow examples of what to bring or not. I am a Litchfield native - My best to you on your upcoming trip.

Come now fellow fishermen .Your tourists in our land and as tourist spend some money and leave alot of your stuff at home because if you don't your considered squatters . You get a great exchange on your dollar and your GST back which is more than us residents do so if your going to play amongst us and use our resources also share a bit of your cash because we pay for it in spades . I'm not saying you should buy big ticket items but bait, booze, gas ,fidos food etc . Come on ,,,don't be so frigging cheap . Even when I travel further north in Ontario I try to help boost the economy of the area I'm fishing in and I don't get more for my dollar or GST back as you do.

TD

haha, now the exchange is horrible, the prices are high and there is no return on our GST now :-)

My how times can change.

I'm heading to Ontario in 2 weeks - what can I expect the duty to be on case of beer #2? I generally only bring my allowance and buy more in Canada. However, my fishing buddy is telling me it's cheaper to bring everything across and pay the duty. I'm not convinced so I'm looking to see what people are "really" paying.

  • Your Responses - Share & Have Fun :)

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
