Matt Johnson
Chris Hanson and I spent the day with Corey Bechtold out on the Sauk River Chain to enjoy a day of ice fishing. Corey landed some nice crappies while Chris and I targeted catfish. A great day on the ice is always even a better day when a big fish gets caught and today was one of those days... I'm fishing about 20 yards away and I see Chris flip open his Otter only to see his Thorne Bros Walleye Sweet Heart doubled over. See, we were catching some catfish, but most were in the 2-4 pound range. Great fighters and they really put a workout on walleye gear. So anyway, I look over and see Chris trying to get this fish up to the hole. At this point all I hear is his drag squealing and him yelling, "I think this one is a little better than the others!" After a couple minutes of fighting this fish he gets a look at it and realizes thats its a nice channel cat. A few more valiant efforts from the fish and it came up the hole... A nice 10 pound channel catfish taken on a plain hook and an Ice Buster Bobber!! A couple quick shots and it went back down the hole. Always cool to see nice fish caught through the ice! Nice fish hanson! Captain B.R.K
Geez Hanson---should have taken you up on your offer to go fish with you and the gang. I was doing the Valentine Day thang so I wasn't able to make it. Good Fish.
hanson
Valentine's is soooo overrated!! Then again, I'm single. Are my priorities screwed up??? That was a very nice catfish!! Ice Buster bobbers sealed the deal on the deadstick. Some strikes were so subtle all you saw was the top of the float waggle but the fish was there. Captain B.R.K
I don't think so Valentine's Day is over rated, but when Valentine's Day has fallen on a weekend the past 3 or 4 years and I've been away on fishing trips, I figured it was time to spend some quality time with the little lady:)

IceHawk
Nice fish Chris!!!! I give a Big Thank You!!!!! for releasing that fish.Cats of this size and bigger is what winter catting is all about. This system has a few dandy's, My personal best is 16 lb and 14 lb all I can say is what a fight. I wouldn't be surprised to see a few fish of this caliber or possibly bigger come at the COOL-CATS gathering. I had a fish on in that area that was huge, I could barely move it off of the bottom. It put up quite the fight but it one the battle and got off to swim another day!!I personally live on the chain and fish it hard for cats. I would really like to see the future of the catfishing in this system stay good. With all the publicity through this site and word of mouth I have seen a meca of cat fisherman on this system. I strongly encourage CPR on these fish, so we can all enjoy more catting in the future. I'm not against keeping a few smaller fish for a meal but please release some of the bigger one's back so others can enjoy them.Good luck to everyone and see you all at the COOL-CATS gathering. hanson
The thought never even crossed my mind to keep a fish like this one. The only thought I had was getting it back in the water after a few photos. I kept a few of the smaller ones to eat. Its a nice problem to have when you have to sort through bigger fish to find the smaller eaters. The couple times I've been out, the fellow fisherman around me were all releasing the cats. And the guys behind me the other day were darn right mad they were catching them. PERCHJR
Hey hanson, nice one I have never caught a cat through the ice just open water, and they fight like crazy in the summer so I can't imagine catching it through a 8" hole!!! And I think your priorities are in order, I just got divorced this last fall and mine are right where they should be on the ice!!! GOOD LUCK AND GOOD FISHING!!!
