Hanging a Lantern In a Fish Trap

Bagley

Recommended Posts

What do you owners of a Fish Trap do to hang a lantern for light.

I would hang it from one of the support bars but I am worried about burning the canvas.

I thought about hanging it lower but then it's in the way.

Fill me in on what you guys do.

I usually use a short bungee cord to hang a lantern from the pole. If you get bored sometime you can drill a hole halfway down in the middle of your house and stick the lantern in that hole. Depending on water and ice clarity, it should illuminate the entire "floor" area of your house. Results may vary.

I just set mine on the ice. It's usally easier to see your holes and heat rises so I get total use out of my lantern. I wiil admit when I'm trying to fish lighter I tend to just go with a headlamp, this is when searching for active fish. It makes me a little more mobile.

As I was told by someone in uniform long ago, any light below the ice is the same as the light bulb in a jar trick. It's a no-no in the "state where nothing is allowed".

Liar, love your signature line!

I usually set my lantern on the ice near the hole. If I'm using a heater instead of the lantern, I use a head light for my lighting purposes. That JR Tackle flashlight is awesome too! Just hang it from a pole on your portable.

I use about a 16" piece of rope and wrap it around the lantern handle twice then just tie it off to the bar above me and off to whatever side is best. I keep it about 6" off the top canvas and no worries. As smelter says the FishBright by Soderbllom Inc. puts all the light on your holes and you can run your lantern on lower heat if you want and still have plenty of light. Check them out at www.soderbloom.com

Thanks for the input guys.

I always set the lantern on the ice. My main concern was to clear up floor space so I could use the door instead of flipping it open all the time. Also I get a little scepticle about lighting up the ice that much in shallower water.

It seemed to me the best spot to hang the lantern was on the in between bar just behind our heads as we're facing the door.

Use a double sided velcro strap (6" piece with opposing surfaces). Just wrap it around your pole then it doubles up on itself. Heats never been an issue. I use them for everthing. When some of you don't have a brake lock on your ATV these work great. Once around your brake lever and handle grip, and presto, you have a brake lock.

Here are a few ideas for you: I used to use one of those ratcheting tie down straps(the end that doesn't have the ratchet on it. Tie it to a cross bar and then you have the hook to put you lantern on. Now this fall I picked out some straps w/ carbineer clips on them, the have velcroso you can valcro it around the pole and your lantern is in the clip. Picked them up at Home Depot. I currently use them to hang bikes in the garage.

I don't advise hanging from a S hook as then it could easily fall and brake if ya stand up and bump it. Put it on a snap (dog collar type) hook of some sort (and be careful when removing as it may be hot). I used tie wraps to attach some snap-type hooks to the center pole and then it is always ready.

LOTWKIng,

The theory is that it illuminates the water below and attracts fish, Minnesota decided it should be illegal. It is allowed in other states and some guys swear buy it.

Duffer,

Have you checked out the new product called the Fish Bright from Jay Soderbloom? There was a tread about it not long ago in this forum. It is unreal how much more light you get out of a lantern!
