bigminnow
Just thought it would be interesting to see what odd things people have caught through the ice. In one year I was lucky enought to catch 2 mud puppy's through the ice. If you haven't seen a mudpuppy before it's a pretty odd event setting the hook on a tip up and having this large salmander like thing mouthing my golden shiner... pretty wild. http://herpcenter.ipfw.edu/index.htm?http://herpcenter.ipfw.edu/outreach/accounts/amphibians/salamanders/Mudpuppy_Waterdog/&

knoppers
this isn't the ugliest fish, but more of a strange fish. was fishing for gills, the vex was showing numerous fish, and they would nibble on my waxie, and I was unable to hook anything for about a half hour. I just wanted to catch one so I could leave, then finally it happened, I caught a golden shiner. I am glad I didn't waste my time fishing for pike. Walleye Guy
The first eelpout I caught was an close to or was an albino eelpout. I caught it on Mille Lacs. It was almost pure white. No pink eyes though. The three guys I was with including a guide said it was the weirdest eelpout they had ever seen. I didn't know any better as it was the first pout I had ever caught. I need to check the photo albums as I may have a "film" photo of it.
efgh
gold shiners make real good pike bait, about 8 years ago they were biting on Hunts lake, they were about 8 ins. long we would catch 8 or 10 and fish for pike with them, to slow them down we would cut 1/2 the tail off , cut the bottom 1/2 off they will swim down, cut the top 1/2 off they will swim up. shur wish I could find some of them now. The Grebe
Eelpout are by far the ugliest, especially the first one you catch. My wife and I had only been going together a year or so, when I introduced her to ice fishing. An Eelpout was the first fish my wife caught, we were fishing out of a portable on Mille Lacs...when she reefed that thing in and it started squirming and twisting all over the floor, she started screaming and flailing to get out of the fishhouse, she thought she had caught some kind of a big fat snake! I was trying to calm her down, talking loud over her yelling, fumbling around trying to get ahold of the pout and get it out of the house....when I held it up and moved toward the door, my wife hollered even louder and dang near torn the zipper trying to get out. She finally bailed, stumbling and half crawling to get herself away from the house and the ugly snake thing she had caught! I'm sure she thought that at the very moment of her escape, I was inside, fighting and being bitten and poisoned by the Eel and I would emerge from the house with the thing attached to my throat! When I finally did come out of the house, there were all these people standing outside their houses looking our way, or had their heads poked out the doors, wondering what the hell was going on and who was getting tuned up? I held up the fish and said, "First Eel" they smiled, gave knowing nods and disappeared back into their houses. Yeah, I'd have to say Eelpout are about the homliest, but I'd bet some of the folks up in Walker would quickly disagree with me!

gonefishin11
A buddy and I were fishing a smaller slough for panfish and a huge water bottle came up his hole. The thing was like 4 inches long and kinda scary looking. I scooped it up with the minnow scoop and put in a powerade bottle and then placed it under my brothers pillow. psegriz
Have to be that old rubber boot my buddy caught back in 97. That thing was ugly even for a boot. He had enough training fluid that he thaught it was a big walleye until morning.

anyfishwilldo
I caught a pout up on Red last year. That was not the funny thing though. It was about -25 out and I threw the ugly thing outside. Went out the next morning, and gave it a toss across the ice, and it broke in half perfectly. Perchpapa
Last season a buddy of mine caught a perch with a parasite. It had little black dots all over it. It was nasty. Neither of us wanted to touch it. So we just cut the line.

So was my old dog. 15 seconds later there was blood and muskrat fur everywhere. The dog got bit in the nose as it was doing its death shake to the muskrat. Its nose bled for two hours, man that was a mess. The muskrat didnt like where it ended up either.
Ole #1
Last year I caught a 34 inch Eel pout on LOW. I thought I had a sturgeon on the line until I saw that ugly monster head. That thing slithered on the loor and left slime all over. I do have it on video and it's still fun to watch.
