Big Lake- I have seen that picture posted on another web site... I dont think the picture is Dr.ed up... but Its not from Minnesota.. I cant remember where exactly that picture is from.. I want to say ND... the biggest clue that its not from MN.. is I believe the deer in the photo is a Mule Deer...could be wrong... There have been a few Mule deer shot in MN.. but not too many!

Yep Mule deer. I know one of those when i see it. Lived in colorado for my first 14 years of life even shot one the year before my family moved to minnesota. you can tell a mule deer and whitetail apart by the ears, if you cant see the ears look at the butt. if it looks like a big circle of white it is a mulie. if it has a "v" shape of whit you are looking at a whitetail.

Nice pics B amish.

What kind of camera do you have?

I hope I have some rolls filled up when I get up there this weekend. Its been pretty slow for pictures lately.

Time for my mock scrapes this weekend, and put the cameras on them. I had a stellar week of pictures prior to rifle season last year on scrapes.

But, we never saw any of the deer that visited them. All pictures were at night.

I heard a rumor recently that someone in the Otowa area in the Minnesota river valley area South Central MN caught a pic of a cougar chasing a deer on his motion camera! I havn't seen the pics yet, but that would be awesome. I did see the cougar pic that was caught on a motion camera near Savage a year or two ago. Anybody else hear of this?

I have seen it, its from out west though, the deer is a blacktail.

so far I have been told it was from wisconsin, washington state, cananda, Iowa, and now minnesota, I think it is actually two pictures combined with photo shop. its on this site somewhere

BLB,

i've got the leaf river digital trail cam, just picked it up this year. i made a mount for it that attaches to a fence post. that way i can put the camera over any scrape, even if there isn't a good tree around. just pound in the fence post and mount the camera to it.

i hope i got some good pics over the week, i have it set over a scrape that has been getting tore up since early october

B. Amish-Those are some nice deer! How much did you pay for your camera? I've heard nothing but good about those Leaf River Digitals. The quality of the pictures looks to be about as good as the quality of the deer in your area!!

What's your opinion on flash trail cameras spooking deer?

I had my camera in an area for three weeks last year. It seemed to me that when it took pictures of certain deer at night, those deer would avoid the area where I had the camera. That made me leary of putting the camera in or near my stand areas.

I have multiple pictures of some deer(bucks I should say).

Although I only have one picture of Big Daddy back in August.

But, I honestly dont think its that big of a deal.

Although, I can say we are rootin' around at the farm all summer, so there is a level of comfort that the deer get I think.

If you have a camera somewhere, where a deer never sees, hears, or smells humans, then you may have a deer with some issues after the flash blasts him.

For the last 3 years, I have countless pictures of the same bucks.

I have a few questions. some of you may have read my posts about Stolen Trail Cams. i did put it out last sunday night. checked it tuesday night and it had taken one pic. checked it today (so i could get it off the public land over the weekend) and no more pics. I have it set up on a scrape that i thought was active but obviously i am doing something wrong. So here are my Questions- How high do you put it up on the tree? because mine was about 4.5-5 feet. and also How do you find a good spot to put your camra that will produce pics?

half2fish:

Up till 2 weeks ago I was filling rolls of film in a week and half. The last few weeks I fave been only getting 3-4 pictures a week. I think they are not on a pattern know like they where in sept. the rut must have them running outside of there usual patterns and trail. did get a picture of a huge deer though.

I put my cameras about 3 feet from the ground and angle it to the slope or the rise. my cameras have a lazer that helps you aim the heat sensor at the right height.

good luck to all

I always questioned if the flash spooked deer. This weekend I took several photos of bucks coming by me. none of the deer I got on film spooked at all. I had 1 about 15 to 20 feet from my tree and never looked up. I think the noise of the film advancing does more harm then the flash of the camera. Just a thought.

Way too cool B Amish. Wow! Thats one pic I dont have.

Bucks sparring. That is very cool.

I rearranged my cameras this weekend. Man, I couldn't find any buck activity at all to put the cameras near.

And stupid me, I forgot all my ingredients at the cabin for making mock scrapes. Cripes!

I finally might have a photo or two to post here.

We have a salt block at our lake cabin that just gets hit hard by the deer and critters. My dad went and picked up a stealthcam and hung it in a tree overlooking the saltblock. It had only snapped off 4-5 pictures during a weeks time so he wasn't sure if he set it up wrong or what. Well, we just got the film back and there is one photo of my dads head and 4 photos of deer. One of the photos is pretty good but they are all of does.

All I can say is that if my dad can figure out how to run one of these cameras, anybody can! grin.gif

I'm going to stay on top of this camera and possibly another one next summer and see what else is walking around out at the lake.

scrapes are my favorite location by far. you just have to find one that is still getting hit with consistency. I don't put the camera too close to the scrape, i like to stay back 10-15', and i also like to mount the camera on a fence post if there isn't a solid tree available
