Generac ix and iq series generators /Inverter

I really don't know much about how well the harbor freight generator works, and the Honda is certainly a superior product so it might depend on your personal situation and how much you would use it.

About the harbor freight price.  For those not familiar with them, they have ads in various papers and magazine as well as in the mail.  Pretty much every ad has a coupon for 20% off one item (along with a coupon for something free with purchase like a set of screwdrivers or a tape measure).

So, the price for the generator is really the quoted price minus 20%.

Here is a picture of a typical ad....

Those Shark vacs are noisy and poor quality. You should have bought a Miele, then you would really have something.

Cool, start of a new thread debating quality, value and ear drum breaking noise. I love it. Let's see if we get more than 52 replies.

Looks like there are half a dozen or so choices over a wide price range.   All is good.

And there is also the old saying.... buy  good, and cry once.  Buy cheap and cry every time.

Different strokes for different folks... etc

Good Luck.

I really do appreciate everyone's input. This is exactly why I inhabit these forums... You get viewpoints that I would not see. You can also save your own heartbreak by someone else's misfortune, if they're kind enough to share.

Thank you guys.

I see Costco has this Champian on sale for $849.00 regularly $999.00. It might be a better option for those looking at the 2 generator setup, or for a cabin/hunting shack. I don't know anything about it, just passing it on.

So......if you used an extension cord to plug into the 120v plug for your ice castle on the Yamaha & Honda you could draw 16.7 amps or 2000 watts from those units. You'd also be able to run something that took 16.7 amps to run.

I was reading thru this post and need some clarification.  I'm looking at a Honda 2000 but can someone explain the outlets/amp ratings on them.    I thought they were 13.5amps each ?  Is that true or do they make a model where one outlet is 16.7 amps ?   If not, then the only way to get 2000 watts is if you run both outlets - is that correct.

thanks,

No Honda has the beefiest outlets, they can handle 20amps.  The Honda is basically overbuilt all around besides fuel capacity.

Thanks Yetti, so they are rated at 13.5 amps  and you can get 20 amps out of them?  WOW,,

I think mine is a Honda Companion.  It has the regular outlets and also a round 30 amp outlet.  Google them and you will see that.

Thanks Lindel.,   I should have been more clear - I am referring to the EU2000i model (non companion).   I know the companion model has one 30 amp outlet and what I believe to be one 13.5 amp outlet.

No, both outlets are rated to handle 20 amps each.  The generator is surge rated (Maximum power) to supply 2000W or 16.7 amps for 30 minutes.  You will never get 20amps out of the outlets, they are oversized for durability.

On my 2000I the outlets on the generator say they are rated at 13.3 A.

I believe that is rated amps not max amps. Early models of the champion had 13.3 amp max plugs. Once you pulled above 13.3amps on them they would heat up and trip. The latest model of champion has 14.2 amps rated. To allow the 1700 watts running without tripping it. You can pull above the rated amps on a plug for a short period until they heat up and trip I believe and if you hit over the max amps for a period of time I think it warms and trips the plug.

I think that is exactly what I typed.

Yes, but you didn't explain the difference for others to understand.

It wasn't my goal as I was just adding to what was posted above. None of it correlates to real world reliability and dependability and I'm not a spec enthusiast. Kinda like the generator above that was rated at XX decibels but if you look at it closer they are measuring it at 23 feet away. Couple that with not having factual data on the quality of the copper and circuitry you really can't compare how they will perform over time when you exceed the advertised rating.

No one has mentioned Wen or Briggs & Stratton brand generators. I have had the Wen 2000w for 3 months now and am very happy with its performance. I'll see how it does in the upcoming winter, as for now it has my vote! Here's a screenshot of it from Amazon....

Here is a genny story that my wife mentioned last night.  I was saying to her how I am so glad we bought the new Honda generator, being funny since we have only used it once.  lol  We will use it more I was just joking about it.  She said ya remember when our power went out and we borrowed your brothers generator?  Well a semi took out a power pole near us and we were without power for about 8 or 10 hours.  I just happened to have my brothers Dewalt generator in the garage.  Ha Ha we have it made.  We didn't open any freezers or frigs during the outage.  We decide to go to bed and watch tv using the generator with a cord out the window.  This will be great.  It has the 8 hp Honda motor on it and starts great.  Well we plugged it in and started the generator.  I went back into the bedroom and we turned on the TV.  After a few minutes we realized we couldn't even enjoy the show cuz the generator was so loud.  I went out and put a long extension cord on it and made sure it was turned away from the  window.  That was better but we would look at each other and laugh......   We finally gave up and did something else, it was still too loud.  I thought of this thread when she brought it up and had to share with you.  For some reason a Honda motor on another generator doesn't mean it will be quiet.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
