leech~~
Hi guys. We are planning on moving up to the rural area of Princeton Minnesota. Im planning on having atleast 3 acres+. The place im looking at buying has 9+ acres. Can i fire my guns on these areas? You are going to get all kinds of answers here. As a past DNR gun safety instructor I'll just add this one. Be assured of your back stop and beyond!

jjack
Thanks. I plan on have a few piles of dirt dumped and using them for a back stop
nofishfisherman
The only way to know for sure is to contact local authorities to find out what local or city ordinances might be in place for that area. What is legal in one area may not be in another when it comes to discharging firearms.
chasineyes
Seeing as to how I have a group of hunters who shoot geese every weekend 500 feet from a 2000 people subdivision, I would say yes... but with any government entitiy who the *&( knows. Ufatz
You might want to stop to think what the effect is going to be on people within a half-mile of you if you plan long sessions with heavy caliber or shotguns.Sometimes people are not all that happy with the noise and do not understand that you might have a perfectly safe backdrop and area.If you want to be a good neighbor consider it before you start shooting. LMITOUT
Sometimes people are not all that happy with the noise This is a great example of why Minnesota's foolish ban on suppressors needs to be lifted.
aanderud
As always, check laws related to distances from structures and the like. If you're not in the city limits and you have 9 acres I'd say odds are good that you should be able to get the required distance from any structures and livestock and whatnot. monstermoose78
If you are out of city limits you are good, but remember to check to see what is behind where you are shooting. It might be worth it to have big pile of dirt put in or built that way you know your bullet is more likely to stay in the big pile of dirt. Mid-Lake Rock
This is a great example of why Minnesota's foolish ban on suppressors needs to be lifted. +1. I know the MN Gun Owners Civil Rights Alliance is working with legislators on a bill for 2015.

boe757
I think the question you have to consider is, do you want neighbors shooting 25 yards from your property? might be fine if it is a family situation, if not I would meet the neighbors before purchasing 2 cents
LMITOUT
That is another reason why I love the great state of Montana. Along with the 35 other states where civilian ownership is allowed.
aanderud
I think the question you have to consider is, do you want neighbors shooting 25 yards from your property? might be fine if it is a family situation, if not I would meet the neighbors before purchasing 2 cents If it's a legal activity, there's no way I'd go asking my neighbors for permission. The beauty of living in a free country is that you have rights to use your property, for the most part. What activities exactly would you draw the line at as far as asking for neighbor permission? How about buying horses? or how about goats? what about loud 4 wheelers or snowmobiles? the list goes on.... Which legal activities would you go asking for permission for, and which would you just do. What about shooting a bb gun? How about a crossbow? Regular bow? How about putting up a trampoline or a pool? Need neighbors' permission for that? They're statistically about 1000x as likely to kill or maim someone as a responsible gun enthusiast. boe757
re-read my post, I don't see where I said you need permission. What I attempted to say was if you can shoot, your neighbors can shoot, so go into that purchase with your eyes wide open, meet the neighbors. I didn't say you have to beg, but you are talking approximately 50 yards x 300 yards. I remember when Andover had ultralights flying from the sod farms - in compliance with FAA regs, no more, neighbors had them stopped, as your neighbors may do with shooting.Aanderud speaks of a responsible gun enthusiast and that may be who is living next to you. I have been around guns all my life, and its been a long time, remember how you would watch the new guy during deer season to see how he would handle his gun, it seems to me you are signing up for a 365 day deer season. But I would be the last person to interfere, even behind Aanderun because I also am a property rights person, and my rights also begin at the property line. last, Princeton has the gun firing zone mapped out on their site
fr0sty
Just because something is legal to do on your property does't mean you aren't being Dick neighbor. I seem to recall reading about a guy flying a drone in his back yard to video the neighbor lady sunbathing in her yard. Legal to do, but still a Dick move. BoxMN
If you buy 9 acres, and there isn't a restriction on shooting, I say have it. Too many people want "their little piece of the country" and then get ticked off when they smell cow p00p, or hear gun shots. Then they should move back to the city, I say. I bought a house near a biker bar. I hear revving harleys at closing time. It's part of it. I don't get ticked off. Your mileage may vary... 38bill
As other have said check with you local authority's to find out. If its legal just use common sense when you are shooting. Too bad everyone around here isn't as concerned about shooting fireworks off at 1 and 2 in the morning.
