Old motors

I run a 1957 5.5 hp Johnson Fishermen in my 65' alumacraft. I get more looks using that boat than my newer Lund. What kind of condition is your tank in? I had to replace my rusted tank with a new one that I purchased and restored on hsolist. They are great little motors if you can keep your tank in good shape!! If your tank is in good shape treat it like a baby, if not expect to spend $200+ for a decent tank. Also keep the tank locked up! I have had one stolen:( I know there is a kit that you can buy so you are able to use new tanks, but not worth the investment IMO

The oldest I have is an evinrude 1962 5.5hp. It is probably the best running engine I have ever seen. The funny thing is I have had 2 old motors with points ignition, and 2 with CDI ignition. Both my newer CDI motors have failed me, one during a rain storm. I have not had a single problem with points.

1967 45 HP chrysler is bullet proof. Been running great for the 20 years I have owned it and is easy to take apart and fix. I rebuild the carb and fuel pump every 4 years and have nad no problem with it. Also a 1971 4.5 HP merc kicker. Same thing. Runs awesome.

I have a '57 7.5hp Johnson. Has not been used for 20 years but still runs. I pull it out of the garage every now and then and it starts after a few pulls. Needs some carb work. Don't have any use for it at the time. Should have it restored someday.

I have 4 oldies that we use for our duck hunting fleet....two Johnson 5.5 motors 55 and 56 vintage and a Johnson 10 horse 1956 and an Evinrude 10 horse 56 or 57 I believe. I have rebuilt all the carbs and lower units with new water pumps and seals etc... they are dead on reliable for sure and pretty much bulletproof! I have three tanks I use, and three others in reserve for the future...I don't know where you would have to buy tanks for $200....I haven't spent more than 10 bucks for one yet. I did order the new ethanol resistant hoses for them though...if you keep a cold pressurized gas tank in a warm workshop, those old hoses give out...and make a stinky mess! It took almost 6 months to get that smell gone!
