rundrave
whats everyone using or suggestions for a meat probe to monitor smoker temp and meat temp? I just bought my first electric smoker and the 3" probe temp in the door doesn't seem accurate. I would like to get some better results that are also easy to monitor remotely.I have researched the Maverick Wireless Thermometer With 2 Probes is there anything else that compares. It looks like a great unit just a little more $$$ than I would like to spend unless I have to.
JP Z
I have a Maverick and for the most part it is "decent" I love the functionality of it. As I can be sitting in the house and watching my temps. But I have gone through 3 of the meat probes as the wires aren't that durable and are shorting or something. Honestly I am looking to move up to the IGrill 2 that seems like the way to go, but again it is $100 but seems to be the way to go.

delcecchi
Old school here. Stuck a candy thermometer through one of the vents on top. (WSM) Only need to check meat temp every few hours so I just open the lid and stick in an instant read thermometer from the restaurant supply place. DonBo
I've had three different Mavericks and all failed while still pretty new. Switched to an All-Clad Digital Probe from Chef's, and so far it's working great.
picksbigwagon
I use a Thermoworks Chef Alarm as a meat probe sensor. My Green Mt. grill holds a very stable Nd accurate temperature inside so I need a thermometer for the meat. Yep, I spent $60 for a meat thermometer, but after killing a venison roast, pork loin and venison loin while trying to make candian bacon last winter, I went for a great, solid termometer. It is well worth the cost. It even has an alarm so when I am sleeping and I wake up at 6 am to two pork butts that did not stall, that beepity beep saved the day

eyeguy 54
interesting. I bought mine about a year ago or so and the meat probe was bad. they sent me a six footer for free and no issues since. I don't use it a lot though.
SkunkedAgain
I'm pretty sure that I have the 732 Maverick as well. I remember reading about bad probes before spending the $70 on it a few years ago. Now after 3+ years of smoking it still works just like the first day. What I like is the temperature alarms. Even with a wooden wind guard that I built, my propane smoker is still susceptible to the wind blowing out my flame. This happened for the first time in a year this past weekend. I was gone when my wife called to say that the alarm was going on my double rib smoke. The temperature had dropped into the 100s. She went out and re-lit the smoker for me and all was well. I've also had it work the opposite way when doing an overnight smoke when the water in the pan finally evaporates. It can elevate the smoker temp above my target. I've had the alarm go off so I knew to go outside and make a quick adjustment.I was hesitant to throw $70 at the unit but it's been well worth it. I really wanted the iphone version but thought that I'd wait until the Maverick died and the phone technology improved. It probably has by now but I haven't looked recently. One last point. I know it's against some silly guy code that many people here cling to, but if you read the instructions it does tell you how to clean the probes properly. That might lead to less problems. I clean my meat probe and then stick it back into a plastic bag in the house so that it stays clean and dry.
eyeguy 54
I'll forgive you for reading them but some won't... lol
JP Z
pffft Reading. I clean them and then put them in my drawer with other grilling supplies....I dunno. I guess I should read that book or something. Eyeguy, I remember you saying they helped you out right away the issue is the probes only have like a 90 day warranty mine were bad after 6 months the first time....then 1 month. Farley
you can always check the accuracy of your door thermo by sticking the probe in some boiling water. Should read 212 degrees F.
Lip_Ripper Guy
Maverick 732 here. 3+ years and still on the original probes, although I do have a couple spares after reading about failures. So far so good. Slicker than snot.
