I currently use Spiderwire smooth cast, (something like that)the newer one. But last year it fraid alot, caused alot of problems. In the market for a new braid that gives a long cast with no/minumal fraying. Any recomendations???What do you guys think of that flouresent braid?

It's really not that new, I used it all of last year.

I have fished with almost every super braid, fiber out there and in my opinion, Stren Superbraid is the best there is.

It is yet to be seen how Pure Fishing's aquisition of Stren will affect this product.

I'm always trying to find the perfect line. I do like the Stren Super Braid so far. I used it some last fall.

I just bought some Fireline XDS (they didn't have the Stren)and can't believe how stiff it is. I hope it works better than it feels. It cost $18 for a spool at Walmart. I guess I'll know in a few more months frown.gif.

I used the Stren braid last year in the heavier weights and liked it alot... I've always used Power Pro and will be switching to the new Stren braid. As cost go's it is a little more expensive, but no matter what braid you use, remember that you can safely get 2 years out of it just by turning it around on the spool. And if you use a momo leader ( blood knot to braid) you will not be clip away at your braid everytime you re-tie.

Cause Power Pro is way better than Fireline. And I was a Fireline junky. PP is round unlike Fireline that's flat. So getting backlashes out is easier. It doesn't fray as easy as Fireline too. Just those two make it better. Also, the smoke color on Fireline fade real quick. PP doesn't fad but it's not a dark color to begin with.

I'll check out that Stren braid. I'm a Stren guy to. And P-line, and Seagar.

I used Spiderwire Stealth last year in the 20 and 30lb range. My understanding is there is not a lot of difference between Stealth and Power Pro. The 20lb would tend to cut itself on the cast and the 30lb did it more often than would 20lb Fireline but still performed faily well.

This year I will be trying Power Pro for the first time because they came out with a 40lb test which should hopefully eliminate the cutting at the spool yet maintain a smaller diameter for maximum weed cutting ease; It sucks to lose as much line as you can when the line cuts at the spool, not to mention the lure you may not get back. I went through all my spools of Stealth last year do to the problem. I regard it disappointing if you can't use a braid for at least two years. I have had fireline last on reels in good condition for 3 or 4 years.

Bp, what do you mean when you mention cutting at the spool? How does this happen? I use PP and have not had the problem of the line cutting or breaking upon a cast. I guess I better find out now so if does happen I will know. Is the average life of braided line 2 years before replacing or is it an individual thing.

BP-
I'd be interested to know about cutting off at the spool too. I use fireline on my baitcaster and have lost many spinnerbaits because the line snaps off at the spool....is this what you mean? It takes the better part of an hour or two just to find the end of the line after it snaps....i'm thinking about ditching the fireline and trying stren or Power Pro.

Here is my theory on cutting at the spool.

Braided lines on a baitcast reel in a thin enough diameter with the right amount of force and outgoing line tension from a cast will cut clean right through itself when the line catches itself on a backlash. You can tell when this has happened by the line breaking at the spool.

I'm pretty good with a baitcaster and have quality reels so I don't backlash very often. I can really throw a lure a long ways and cast with a lot of force; when the line flying off the spool happens to coil from a slight overrun it can catch itself on the line playing out; if the coil tightens something has to give as all the momentum from line playing out gets stopped at the coil; I think the braid just rips right through itself because of the small diameter and lack of stretch. For some reason, I am not sure of, the line playing off the spool at the spool is the most vulnerable spot and gives first unless there are significant frays in the line that has already played out and the line will sometimes snap there instead.

The one good thing about breaking at the spool is that you can often get the lure back because there is a line trail that can lead you too it. That is expecially true of Fireline which will float. It sucks though cause you can lose a fair amount of line.

I've run into the probrem rarely with 20lb fireline but far more often with the thinner diameter stuff. Also the Stealth with it's thin diameter seemed to do the same thing. I just chock it up to long casting and braided line. If you don't cast with a lot of force it will not happen. Also I think a softer rod may cut down on it to by absording some of the shock.

Ok guys, with all this talk of line snap, now ya got me thinking I might have made a mistake! Two weeks ago I went out and bought a spool of 20/6 power pro and spooled up my currado, and used it to go laker fishing, and really liked the stuff, and didn't ice up. So this past saturday, went to WM and they had 30/8 power pro on clearance for $8.00 a spool, so I bought the last 4 spools and relined 3 baitcasters, and 2 of my spinning reels, for the up coming season. So I guess my question here is this, will it do a decent job on a spinning outfit for texas - carolina rigs, and should a guy use a mono leader? I guess the one positive thing is, I left my crank bait rod alone which uses 17 xt, any one have any comments? The rods I put the P.P. on are used mostly foy jigs, tubes etc.

I have been using power pro for two years now and really like it. Its nice to know I aint the only one throwing spinnerbaits across the lake when the line snaps. Last year I started using the 50lb size and had no problems with breakage. I am going to give a spool of the new P-line spectraIV braid a try this year. Now if they could only come up with a braid that doesnt fade after a couple days on the water.

The Stren Superbraid stays round and does not fade. I actually did not even have to re-tie...did not fray at all. I went from Gorilla Braid to Spiderwire to Fireline to Whiplash and now to Superbraid...It's the best there is so far in my opinion.

Worm burner:

I fish braid on my c-rig rod with a fluorocarbon leader, as I've said before I notice an increase bite ratio with fluor. I also blood knot a fluor. leader to my jig-worm rod and have not had any problems with knot breakage, I do however us fishing glue on the know . good luck

Wormburnner, I think you got an excellent deal. I have no experience with the PP but my guess is that it will perform just like the Stealth and I was pleased with how it worked even with the occasional cut at the reel.

I think the 30lb is especially good for jigging and spinning applications. It's the long casting of heavier non aerodynamic lures that is the problem with cutting at the reel.

I'm looking forward to giving it a try this spring when using a jig, I'm so use to fishing with XT, they say with the Braids you can feel more strikes, and rocks or structure. I wasn't sure about using braid on a spinning reel, but I've talked to a few guys, and they said it works great, guess I'll find out. All the reels I use are Shimano, so I hope the quality helps.

Pure Fishing bought Stren? Where is this information published?

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I have not heard anything about this.

Berkley was something like 50% off the market share and Stren was approximately 30%. (These figures were from a few years ago when Pure Fishing bought SpiderWire from Johnson Outdoors.) I don't think they would get govt approval (anti-trust).

"Did'nt the stealth fray on you?"

I don't remeber it doing that. Occasionally I had to cut line cause it got knicked up, but nothing I would consider unusual for as much as I fish and for the type of fishing I do.
