Gordie
Early 70's Westernfield 550 same as an Mossberg 550,500 3inch chamber, forcing cone extended, backbored to .735,cut choke for choke tubes, dura coated and refinished Stock. I think this is one of the nicest stocks I have seen in a long time. Before After

leech~~
Very nice work Gordie. Great to see old things reborn! Did you do the jewel work on the breech block also or was that there?
Gordie
Yes that is real wood Ufatz and I was amazed also. This gun was built back in the day when a piece of wood was a piece of wood, and they sprayed tinted poly on them so they would all look the same. leech that is a factory jewel on those old mossbergs, and its one of the nicer one have seen too. swamptiger
Never seen a Mossberg that fancy. What's the vintage - late 50s, early 60s?
Ufatz
Taking another look, I conclude that stock was ADDED to the gun after it left the factory. Can't believe they would have a CARVED stock as factory stuff. Frankly and personally, I don't care for stock carving so all they did was ruin a dandy piece of wood as far as I'm concerned.Still quite a nice old piece. Should be easy to determine vintage. I'm betting not as old as you think.
Gordie
The Stock is a factory piece of wood it was never been off the gun until I pulled it off. It was the factory poly that they use to spray on the stocks in the early 70's or late 60's.It was a trap model however and that may explain the fancy lumber. Ufatz
Ahhhh........if it truly was a "trap gun" that would indeed explain the stock.Too bad the defaced such pretty wood with carving! Ha Ha Ha!Nice wood for a Mod. 21 or a DHE Parker 20. It could pass for a trap grade Mod.12 for that matter, except for the metal finishing.Nice old piece. Engraving is a different animal for sure that take some steady hands. Not me, I can hardly put a flat screw driver in the slot without stripping it!
