Microguide rods

How many of you guys own Microguide rods? What applications do you use them for? What brands do you have and do you like them? I'm in the market for 4-5 new rods this spring and might be interested in purchasing one but wanted to hear thoughts on them first.

I had a couple with micros, and currently several with low profile guides that are kind of in between a standard guide and a micro (many of my Powells have them). I got rid of the rods I had with micros, but that was more because I didn't have a real use for the rod itself, and didn't have much to do with the guides.

I suppose there's a difference just based on the physics involved - less line slap, etc. But I didn't notice it really. The one thing I will say is micros gave me fits fishing in wild rice. The rice stalks kind of catch on braid anyhow, and they'd ride up the line and jam in the top guide. I tried using a micro guide rod fishing spoons in the rice and it drove me crazy. Other than that, maybe I'm just oblivious, and to be fair I have never fished the same rod with and without micros side by side to get a real apples to apples comparison, but I kind of think it's a distinction without a difference performance-wise.

Haha. I would love to sell that guitar. Not even sure how much it is worth. I actually sold a couple of Mojos and a Vendetta so I'm looking to just replace those. And I have $250 left in Visa Prepaid cards that were given to me down at the Classic haha. I think I'll wait until the Sportsman show at the end of this month and see if I can get a bulk deal on rods :-)

Thorne Bros. has their Spring Sale in late April, right at the store. Good prices. You should see if they will work a deal with you. That is usually the week that I begin eating Ramen noodles for a month. grin

I bought a Falcon BuCoo Micro guide 7-0 last year and I use it for tossing spinnerbaits. Hard to make a bad cast with it. Using Power Pro super silk line and it just glides through. I would buy another. I would give it a big thumbs up!

I build all of my bass rods with micros, and have built a few musky rods with them also. The only down side I have found is fishing in freezing temperatures. They will develop ice a little quicker than a larger guide, however a squirt of reel magic helps prevent that.

As far as techniques I use them for, everything from drop shooting to pounder double dawgs... Built properly the rod and guides will handle what ever you throw.

I rebuilt a rod a couple years ago and put micros on to test out. I also have a couple twins to it that I have yet to rebuild due to time, but will be doing so to them and a few other rods I own when I get a chance. The weight difference is not a ton, but it is noticeable. I haven't noticed a huge difference in casting distance. The one key difference that is the key for me is the significantly lower profile of the guides. They get snagged a whole lot less and putting them in rod lockers and rod sleeves is much easier and quicker.

You know what I think would bother me is cotton!! Man I hate when there's cotton on the water and I bet the micro guides would not be fun with that.

This is my only issue with the one micro rod I have. Drove me nuts last spring as the top guide was constantly getting plugged. Other than that I enjoy fishing it.

I only have one rod with micro's and it's a St. Croix Rage. I used the rod for dropshotting and I liked it because it was nice and light. I wouldn't say it helped me cast further, or not that I noticed. I'm going to be switching my dropshotting over to a spinning setup this year though so I'm not sure what new use the rod with micro's will have.

I have 6 rods with micros. I like them a lot. I have only had stuff get bunched up at the top guide a couple times. I think the only thing I wouldn't recommend them for is frogging. Pulling braid across the surface pulls in a lot of junk. I also don't use them really late in the season when the temp gets around or below freezing because they ice up more quickly.

The only difference between regular and micro guides--by .1 ounce. .1 ounce of a difference is not noticeable in my hand. Casting distance is pretty much tied between those two guides. However, comes down to sensitivity--micro guides win hands down. I have fished micro guides in colder temps and noticed it did freeze guides up as time progressed. I had to swap out my micro guided rods to regular guided rods to keep fishing away on a hot bite I was on.

My understanding Micro guides are 85% lighter then a standard set of guides on a rod. Looking at my Falcon and comparing eyes between a micro and a standard rod you can see there is a lot less material being used, add on the weight of glue and wrapping needed and it adds up to more then .1 ounce. Doing some reading and the claim is a set of micro guides only weight as much as just the first two conventional guides on an old rod. My Falcon has 10 guides plus the tip on a seven foot rod.

I have one rod with micro guides.. Its my custom Thorne Bros Dropshot rod.. So I'm not really going for long casts or anthing.. Not sure if it helps with sensitivity, but it helps my confidence when the rod is soo light.

right on ! I built a PHEONIX IMB700 drop shot rod with micros ..running 6# flouro its tough to tell if cast distance is any better. But I do think that there is less fatituge in landing big fish on light line and. and way light and less fatigue on your rist shakin, a dropshot
