AWS
Found this, http://www.tailgaterstrap.com/ on a RV site, seems to work with 20 and 30 pounders providing you still have a tailgate.

magicstix
Do like Jakemn said. Make a little 1/2 round rack/cradle for tanks to sit in and strap them down from there.

broman
While I cannot find any law against it, from what I understand is that transporting tanks on their side is not recommended because if the vent opens it can spill out liquid propane instead of gas which is more dangerous.Any propane experts out there that can provide some insight on whether or not transporting a tank on it's side is illegal or dangerous? Correct. There is a sign at the propane filler stating this.

mmartin
Correct. There is a sign at the propane filler stating this. Sign must not mean dump. The people filling them watch you take them out and put them back in your truck laying down.
Hawg
Their responsibility ends at telling you. I can't imagine being the person to enforce it. Right or wrong, that's the way it is.
DTro
I've had a few nasty heater flare ups at initial startup if my tank happens to be on its side when transporting. Nobody has mentioned it yet, but maybe a milk crate???
hamms-scooter
I worked at a lumber yard in high school and filled tanks and we were told never lay them down. They said it put more pressure on the valve .

What I was told when trying to get one refilled is that 100 lbs can't be hauled or refilled if you bring them to any station laying down because they do not have the safety valve built inside. The guy told me anything under 30lbs has the valve and can be hauled in the back of a car trunk or truck.
