C list scam?

givetoget

Question

I am selling a truck on the list of C, I believe it is a scam. I know its been posted on here before but I did a search and found nothing on it. The guy is from ohio, said he will buy sight unseen, said he would pay with certified check and will wait for it to clear at my bank. Wants my name and address and has a shipper to handle everything.

Scam correct? and if so what should I or can I do about it. Anyone else deal with this?

Thanks

I had a wheeler listed and someone was trying to scam me also, see below as what they were trying to do they said they were from new York?

Hello,

Thanks for your mail, and also I am very much impressed with pic, and as a matter of fact, I am ready to make payment immediately via Cashier check, but I will need you to kindly get back to me with your full name, address, asking price, and also your direct phone# so that the payment can be mailed out to you. Meanwhile, an extra fees will be added to your asking price, which is meant for shipping and insurance, and that all you need to do immediately you receive the payment is to get it cashed, deduct your asking price from the amount sent to you, and then get the rest of the money wired to the shipper via western union money transfer, and as soon as the shipper receives the fund, he will in return get in touch with you, and arrangement will be made on how and when the item will be picked.

So, if OK with the arrangement, do kindly get back to me with update, so that the payment can be mailed out to you.

I await your response.

I was selling a boat trailer on there awhile ago and had responses just like that on my phone from like 6 different numbers, all promising certified checks and such and their shipper would come and pick it up. I just started asking for their info so I could deliver the trailer and pickup my check. Don't know why but they never responded back.

I had a reply like that. They did send a check. For the amount plus the shipping. Then wanted me to wire funds western union to the shipper. From what I can gather, once the funds are wired you cannot get them back. And if I cashed the check and it bounced I would still be held responsible which I didn't understand at the time. I checked out the address that they sent and it was bogus. I burnt the check.

A lot of them I have run into say they are in the Military and will be getting out soon and want to buy..... and have it there when they ship back home. Everyone has a soft spot for people in the Military, Right. whistle

Here's one I got, see how this sounds to you.

I in US military and interested in your 4 wheeler.

I in US military! Does that sound like someone from this country? grin

Seen this numerous times before and YES, it is a scam that has been around for awhile. I even called the law and they said this one is tough to track down the crook as they move around the country so much.

Guy was going to buy a snowmobile trailer from me and almost hooked me. They will send you a check with the shipping included but the check will be a counterfit.

EXACT same thing happened to us few weeks back...."nothing on it. The guy is from ohio, said he will buy sight unseen, said he would pay with certified check and will wait for it to clear at my bank. Wants my name and address and has a shipper to handle everything."

Best thing to do is just ignore them. Surely one has better stuff to do than spend your time playing with some scammer, eh?

Usually it's like previously mentioned...cash the check then wire the money to the shipper. Bang, you're burned because the check is bogus and no refunds though wiring money.

Or, the check is for more than the sales amount "just in case", so please send back the difference...which is the amount you were just scammed out out.

I work in bank fraud prevention. What you are describing are key elements of a scam. Red flags should be buying large dollar items without seeing-test driving, etc. Other red flags, buyer not negotiating price, not asking questions, sending more money than selling price. And could the buyer find the same item closer to their residence cheaper, without shipping??The cost of shipping could pay for a lot of gas to inspect and pick up the truck . I've seen way too many people fall victim to these scams. Many times they are avoidable. Common sense helps, does the buyer and transaction make sense?

I have a retail business with a storefront and also a HSOforum. Almost daily we get online or email orders for several thousand dollars of product and all start the same way. Need these products immediately and rush ship. Respond to this email with cost and we will electronically transfer funds or send certified bank check. As a small operation we can pick these scams out, but I'd bet big internet sellers who handle thousands of orders and transactions an hour get nailed frequently.

I guess I didn't realize this stuff was so wide spread. But its over now truck sold this morning. Sold it to a young man just starting out. Seamed like a very respectful responsible young man so he ended up getting it for 2 bills less than what I said was going to be my bottom price. I guess that's my good deed for the month.
