gas mileage

Recommended Posts

So far, we've only pulled our wheelhouse (8x16 ice castle) from Duluth to home, we got around 10 mpg with our 2003 silverado. Only went about 60, but fighting a pretty strong wind that day. Part of the reason we plan to just leave the house up at Red Lake for most of the season... $1/day storage fee is a lot cheaper than all that gas every weekend.

I call slight bull on most here. I get around 9 with my 2011 F150 doing 70-75 with the 5.0 V8 in tow mode. Granted I usually have my sled in my 8x16 castle, but still. The difference here probably being I get real time fuel consumption read outs while folks with older trucks may be doing their own math.

I know these last-gen engines are not out-performing current gen engines, regardless of make. Everyday driving, I average 18-18.5 mpg for comparison.

Doing your own math as to miles driven on a given amount of fuel gives a much more accurate reading of MPG than the "real time" read outs do! Those real time read outs all depend on whether you look at it going up a hill, down a hill, on the gas, coasting to a stop etc.

The ONLY way to get your avg MPG is to "do the math".

By comparison, our 28' Dutchmen express Motorhome (Chevy chassis V8) also gets about 10 as well (doesn't seem to matter if we're pulling the boat or wheelers or not). Gotten as good as 12, and as bad as 8, but usually right around 10. A lot of people are surprised we do that well on gas (others with similar sized rigs get 7 or 8), but it's been pretty consistent over the 7 years we've owned it.

We just figure about 10 no matter what we're camping in smile

Guess I needed to clarify by "real time read outs" I meant instantaneous but ALSO the vehicle gives you loads of other fuel consumption info like an average over the course of a tank/trip/etc all via a slick screen. Was simply referring to an on board computer being more accurate potentially than some people's math skills and memories. whistle

Call it bull all you want. But mine don't have the computer gauge so is done all by my math. And I double checked it! I get 18 to 20 empty. I am sure I had a tail wind when I got that. But it still does get good gas mileage. So I will drive my truck when anyone goes and I will buy the gas!! smile

Now you really lost it. Straight from fueleconomy.gov (05 Titan 4wd):

12 City

14 Combined

17 Highway

So you are saying, with e10 gas here in MN (which hurts MPG), you are getting ABOVE the EPA ratings? That would be the only gas engine on the planet to do it. LOL!! The Titan is the least efficient Pickup Truck you can buy.

I am not going to sit and argue that it happened. And it does get that gas mileage. Every vehicle manufacturer out there has this rating it doesn't mean tat is all it will get! This is my end to posting to this site for a while!!!

'00 Silverado & 17' RV going to LOW and URL 10-14mpg depending on wind direction. If pulling directly into the wind just open the wallet and don't look!!! Chipping your truck can help slightly, but I haven't heard of many people doing it. deisel helps milage when pulling over the gas motor, but initial cost has helped me decide against them. When on the lake though I would take gas over leaving a deisel run all weekend so it will run when leaving in -20 temps. Maybe the newer ones are easier starting, but the older ones that I seen had some issues.

05 Nissan Titan, 8x18 Ice castle, 55 to 60 mph, 15-17mpg.

Maybe 15-17 kilometers per gallon laugh

Or you checked your mileage once with a 50 mph tailwind!

What are you smokin man???? LOL

I've only towed the new shack with the new truck once and got 9 mpg (2013 1500 and 6x16 yetti).

My old truck (04 2500) would get 7-8 with an equivalent shack, but handled better and swayed less in the wind.
