Powder load for Omega 50 cal

Recommended Posts

I have not shot my ML for a few years. Seem's to me I use to shoot 3-50 grain pellets of Triple 7 in one load. I was reading on the Triple 7 package and it says to only load 2-50 grain pellets or 2-50"s and 1-30 grain for a max load of 130 grains of powder.

I thought I use to shoot 150 grains per load with 250 grain Shockwave bullet.

Anyone with an Omega out there that shoots 150 grains per load? Don't want to create too much pressure in the barrel.

Thanks.

Harvey,

I may be totally off base but I remember reading somewhere that loose powder and pellets were a bit different in that 100 grains of powder was from an efficiency standpoint closer to 130 grains of pellets. Had to do with how the powder burned loose vs pelletized. I think they might have sold 50 grain pellets as well as 30 grain pellets so that a guy could load up 2 50s and 1 30 to somewhat equal what 100 grains of loose powder would be. This was with 777.

That being said, I really like the Blackhorn 209 loose powder in my Omega as it easy to take care of, is non-corrosive and cleans up easy. I have had the same jug for 3 yrs, goes off when I pull the trigger and the jug is still is 1/3 full.

Either way - the deer doesn't care what powder you use...

The best thing to do is find the load that shoots the best out of your gun by using the minimum amount of powder required because any extra is just burned away and has really no effect other than a bit of extra smoke and fire.

More is not always better in this case.

I had a hard time finding the 30 grain Triple 7 pellets when I looked for them last year. I wanted that 130 grain load also. That's when I opted to try the White Hots since they're supposedly a little hotter than T 7 pellets. Two White Hot pellets do just fine for me.

I do plan on trying out the Blackhorn 209 for my next powder purchase though. Since I'm using high pressure sabots, I'm hoping the second or third round loads easier in the cleaner barrel that I understand is a benefit of the 209 powder.

I will be changing as soon as I shoot up what I have now in my gun cabinet, trouble is, that could be a couple years yet. I have both the 50 and 30 grain now. 150 grains loaded does give more smoke than needed from 100 grain for sure and it seem's my barrel is pretty dirty after 2-3 shots with the 777.

not to mention that extra smoke can effect seeing what happened after the shot. Aim, squeeze, boom, and then the cloud that effects seeing the deer, which direction it may have gone if it didn't drop in it's tracks. There will always be a cloud but less cloud can be better.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
