9 Days at our place in Kansas

Well, we headed down to our place in Kansas on Nov 7th. Pulled into the mobile around 6pm. There would be 5 of us for a couple days then 4 the remainder. Unpacked and got everything ready for the morning.

It didn’t take long and deer were being seen. Of the 8 mornings I sat on stand, I bet 6 of them I had seen a deer before the sun came over the horizon.

We would shoot out a text any time we seen something. A lot of texts went out. Don’t think I sat a stand, morning or evening without seeing a deer. Maybe once.

Quite a few bucks passed on up to about 130 inches. Bucks chasing does, cruising, coming in to check out the decoy. November in Kansas, can’t wait for next year.

Well, on the afternoon of 11-11 my 75 year old uncle got the ball rolling. You have seen his picture before, but he shot the biggest buck on our property. A 5.5 year old 9 point that would score 160 and be the biggest of the trip. We have pictures of him for the last 4 years. He came from behind the stand and a quick brrrp made him stop. The double lung shot put him down in 50 yards.

The next evening the brother full-16015-39308-dave2013.jpg

takes a decoy out to our recently cut corn field. A 10 pointer is out following a doe with another little buck. He doesn’t even give the decoy much of a look and heads 150 yards to the other end of the field, then decides he is going to check out the decoy a little closer. Mistake. He made it just inside the woods. We had a picture of this buck from a couple days before he was shot, but he was not on our property til then.

On the evening of the 14th, I had the decoy out in the same tree as McLovin. A fawn and a fork came to investigate and then a heavy 8 with stickers came out too. It was getting dark and I said if he makes it to 20 I am going to shoot. Well he made it to about 25 yard and I had brush in the way so I opted not to shoot. The Brother full-16015-39309-bryan2013.jpg

drove the truck all the way to the base of my tree as there were deer in the field til dark and I didn’t want them to know I was there. Including a 10 pointer on the far side chasing a doe.

The next morning I took a stand on a different field edge and saw two forks and a racked buck early then it slowed down. So at 7:50 I left and headed to a stand in the woods about 300 yards north of the stand I saw the heavy 8. At 8:10 I was in the tree. At 8:12 my bow almost went crashing down 20 feet but I caught it in time. At about 8:50 I look to the south and see a deer feeding. Putting up the binoculars, I can see it is the same heavy 8. He takes his time but he finally ends up 5 yards away from the tree. We did not have any photos of my buck all year.

3 for 5 over 9 days, we are not in Minnesota anymore.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
