Quote:

BENTON COUNTY, Minn. - A Sartell man is in the hospital after falling through thin ice on Little Rock Lake Friday morning.

Just before 11:30 a.m., the Benton County Sheriff's Office received a call that a person had fallen through the ice about 200 yards from shore.

Several law enforcement agencies responded, but by the time rescue units were able to deploy the proper equipment, Joshua Johnson, 30, had gone below the water.

Nearly an hour later, rescue teams located Johnson in about 10 feet of water near the Erdmann's Point area on the east shore of the lake. Johnson was flown to a St. Cloud hospital where he's listed in critical condition.

Investigators determined Johnson had been fishing on the lake. The ice was between one-and-a-half and two inches thick near the shore line. Authorities urge the public to stay off any ice found on local waterways.

I love to ice fish as much as anyone but I was taught one clear message growing up.

If you are stupid you are going to die. This may be a little harsh but it has kept me alive so far.

Hope this guy recovers and LEARNS from his mistake.

Sure hope this guy lives and has learned his lesson. I'm about as fanatical about ice fishing as they come, but Forrest Gump is ringing in my ear.... Mamma said stupid is as stupid does!

If your going out on 2" of ice, you better have all your safety bases covered... First and foremost a fishing partner, then a PFD, lift suit, picks, ropes, cleats and a spud bar.

He was airlifted to the UofM Fairview facility and is in an induced coma. He was found in about 10 feet of water from the reports.

30 year old with two children and his wife is pregnant with another. I hope he pulls through for them.

Can't imagine what his family is going through right now.

I also cant imagine where anyone would think 2" is safe.

I could see fishing on 2 inches of ice if you had all the safety equipment, and were in a weed patch 10-15 ft from shore on panfish in water that wasn't deeper then your neck.

However going out 200 yards on 2inches of ice? [PoorWordUsage]! I'm scared to do that with 5 inches of ice.

All in all I hope he pulls through for his kids and wife. Tragic that he put himself in such a position.

I hope he recovers and is greeted by a nice bill for all the efforts to save him. Then he is sentenced to community service and speaking about ice safety.

So you are saying this guy is a criminal, for making a stupid mistake, especially when his life is hanging in the balance!? Unbelievable.

its one thing to make a stupid mistake and only injure yourself. Quite another to risk other peoples lives.

More unbelievable is that you seem to think this is no big deal.

Like I said I hope he makes a full recovery especially for his children's sake.
