Fall Fishing

Just wondering who here prefers fall over summer? I'm all for fall.

A lot of it has to do with the temperature and not just the phenomenal fishing, plus most of the lakes you have almost to yourself come October.

These "cooler" days just get me ramped up for my favorite time of year.

Big Big fan of fall fishing, The beginning of summer always seem to be real busy for me when I was self employed and fall was when things quieted down and I could spend time on the water. Now that I have been retired I have the time but still prefer to fish September into late October. Fall may find me fishing several days in a row and I have been lucky the past few seasons to find the bite on different lakes and to enjoy some really good fishing. I might travel eighty miles north one day, near my house a few days later and the end of the week may find me eighty miles south of home. This time of the year that hundred and fifty miles difference can be the difference between lakes turning over or already done. Of course the more you do it the better you get at picking lakes at the right time. Not to mention there usually is no one else on the water.. Some of the lakes are back in the sticks and I also get a little bird hunting in, and added bonus. If I had to put a number on it I would say 80% of my fishing is done during that 6-8 week period.

Link for some fall fishing last year.

Fall is awesome. It's just so hard to fit fishing in with bow hunting, duck hunting, pheasant hunting, and the busy season for work. Every year I tell myself I'm gonna fish more in the fall, but it never happens. I still get out some, but not as much as I'd like.

Nothing beats an October early morning of walleye fishing on the Rainy River, followed by an afternoon of grouse hunting, and an evening in the stand for bear or deer.

Next morning, ducks and geese till 11:00 a.m., then an afternoon of dragging big cranks in the river, finally followed by an amazing grilled game feed around a warm campfire, watching a gorgeous late October sunset with the sounds of migrating waterfowl in the distance.

Absolutely priceless! wink

Yep I like the sound of that.

Fall is great! I go to Brainerd in late september...weather is still nice, fishing is great, and almost all of the recreation traffic is gone!

In october I like to go to Grand Marais and fish for trout. Something about the cold crisp air and shotguns going off in the distance make catching 12 inch splake even more special.

As far as I'm concerned fall is prime time for walleyes and decent for everything else. I spend as many days as possible on the water and take several long weekend trips to Vermillion, Rainy and Canada each fall. Most years I fish right up to November, before I call it a season because of cold temps.

You should give the first week of November a try Nick! In fact I'll fish open water till I can't take it any longer.

Talk about jumpin' in the boat...get out there just before ice up! wink

True but they are much harder to find that time of year. I know exactly where to find them year in year out in October.

I find fall fishing a little tougher than summer but on days it's good in the fall, it's really good.

You really do have the lakes to yourself and the only hunting I do is walk around the woods in my area for grouse. I also don't ice fish so there is that need to keep my boat out till ice up
