P.T.Barnum was the man who said it: "There's a sucker born every minute."

The dealer makes more on the ext. warranty then on the truck and they will try to push it down your throat!!

Just went through it on 2013 Tahoe. Think seriously about these new vehicles and how unlikely it is you will have anything major go wrong. And for the first three years you are covered anyway. How long you gonna keep it? How much can you repair on your own for little chunks here and there that won't add up to the warranty cost.

And, most important of all.....WHO is writing the warranty? Do they turn right around and farm it out to a third party. Check the marvelous history of THAT process.

I say run like hell the other way from the guy trying to sell it to you.

Others will have a different opinion.

But they'll be wrong. Ha Ha Ha!

Im not a fan of ext warranties. You would be better off putting that money in a bank account for a rainy day. Most people will put on 75K in 3 years or so and most vehicles are pretty good for the first 100,000 miles. And there is a good chance if something were to go wrong it would be under your 3 year warranty. You can always add the ext warranty later if you want. If you have a loan you are also paying interest on that 1700 which would be more like 2K plus down the road.

Wait until your basic 3 year warranty is up, then shop around. No different than buying a vehicle. A week before mine was up, I shopped around Ford sites recommended by a certain truck owners club, and found the Ford Premium Care warranty for 4 years from Ford at less than $800 with a $50 deductible, as compared to $1500 quoted by local dealer's. Took it to my Ford dealer to see if he'd match it, and they did....

Don't forget your Powertrain warranty is 5 year/60,000 miles. I would buy one on a used import model, but that is about it. And only if it wasn't a bad deal.

I've bought extended warranties on 2 new vehicles and then watched my costs after that. There is always little quirks like "no deductable if you purchased it here". On both of the vehicles I tracked the cost of the "insurance policy" (and that is what it is) was $100 more than what it cost to fix any issues over the period of the "warranty". I've bought 2 new vehicles since and haven't elected to purchase the "extended warranty" since. No problems so far and I don't trade very often.

The warranty companies aren't out there for one reason -- to make money. Put that money back in the bank account and save it for the few repairs you will have, you'll come out in the long run. The insurance company sure does.

Also, you could look at it this way:

If you don't expect to have $1700 worth of warranty issues, then you shouldn't buy the warranty.

If you DO expect to have $1700 bucks worth of warranty (non wear-and-tear) issues on that truck during years 4-7 (all under 75k miles), than you're probably buying the wrong truck. No new vehicle should should need thousands of dollars of defective part repair in the first 75k miles.

I buy them, but I buy Dodge trucks / vehicles and for $2,500, I can buy a lifetime warranty.

Unlimited mileage, unlimited years.

$100 deductible. I plow snow, I pull trailers all summer. They just rebuilt the front end of my 2011 at 50k miles for $100.

I look at it as I'm paying for repairs upfront, as payments over the life of the loan, at an extra $20-30 / month rather than $800 here, $2,000 there.

Two summers ago I had the A/C condesnser freeze up on a 2007 3500, and then the rear end dropped a week later. It was over $3,000. Needless to say, I was upset with myself then.

A 75k mile warranty? No. Unlimited mileage/years, yes.

It's the Chrysler MaxCare Lifetime Warranty for those that don't believe you can buy one. The dealer won't offer it, you have to ask for it.

They are sold because they make a boatload of money for the stores. They aren't always a bad idea, but on a truck like an F150, I would avoid it. Put away $50 a month for repairs starting now, and I can almost guaranty that you will come out better than having bought the warranty. Also, I found a lot of customer frustration as some part failures were considered regular wear and tear at a certain point. As was previously mentioned, think about it at 2 yrs, 11 months and 35,000 miles. All that being said, if I were buying a 6 year old Land Rover or other European car, I would definitely have it.

If you buy a Ford ESP and do not use it you get 90% of your money back I believe. The warranty is nice if you have an electrical problem. Dollars can add up quick.

As a Ford tech I buy the esp premium care warranty on my vehicles. I buy a 2 year old vehicle so I already have an idea of what might go wrong and make sure it gets taken care of before it is out of warranty. I don't put a lot of miles on per year and the warranty cost us $50 over cost. You have 3 years to check them out.
