I have never gut shot a deer and if you hit the front boiler room 2 or 3 times you don't loose any meat, just kill the animal quicker and don't risk loosing it. Worst case you loose a bit of front leg meat which is no big loss to me. If anyone is close enough to be in peril if I shoot 2 or 3 times they are still in same peril if I shoot once. I hope you never sit that close to anyone! Of course sometimes it only takes 1, but not always. No need to "limit" your shots. Good luck to all and be safe this weekend! I will be in Carlton county.

Lovin' the discussion.... 2 or 3 in the boiler room???

Haaa. complete B S....

I call out one in the guts and maybe 3 sprayed around the rest of the torso.... good grief......

I will continue to sit in my stand and shake my head any time I hear more than 3 shots in a sequence.....

So earlier you said you have emptied a clip "6 rounds" many times, and now its 2 or 3 to the boiler room. Unless all your deer stand broadside after the first shot "never gut shot a deer" is hard to believe. Unless you count the "Texas heart shot" as the boiler room. Good luck to you too, and may all six rounds hit the boiler room of another 10 pointer.

Don't tell me it's raining when your peeing down my back.

No reason to hate. You can check the HSO deer photos from the past 2 seasons and see both 10 pointers, both with 2 & 4 shots in the vitals. With a semi-auto it is not hard to do. I also hunt in management area where the limit was 5 deer. In one sit you can easily take 3 deer on occasion. That will run a clip of 6 out quick. If you are some kind of purist who only shoots once that is your choice, to each his own. I would rather ensure my success with a few shots in the vitals. Good luck this weekend to all!

Every opener in NoDak I listen to a group and always wonder what in the world they are shooting at. Sounds like WW2 after the first 10 minutes of the season.

I have yet to see a deer walk away more than 10ft with a 7mm or 300 mag shot in the vitals. NEVER.

I would not question your 2-4 shots in the vitals if you are shooting a pop or dart gun.

You could shoot the deer 10 times in the boileroom but why??

on my bench at home, i have 2 empty .308 shells, and 2 empty 30-06 shells.

from the last 4 deer i have shot.

at his rate, the boxes of cartridges i have should last my lifetime. granted i'm hunting big aspen-birth woods so either you have a <50 yd shot, or you don't.

Two seasons ago I went to the local shooting range and got my 30-06 all sighted in for 150 yards. It took a little while because it seemed like I was starting to throw the bullet near the end so the guy running the range adjusted the sites and tightened the scope (which was loose) then I put another clip downrange on target. Figured I was good to go. First day a deer comes out at 150 yards...perfect that's where my gun is sighted in at. I squeezed a shot and he didn't move, so I set my dot again and fired...nothing. deer still stood there. I figured maybe my scope was off so I dropped the dot and fired. nothing. So i set the dot on its back and nothing. I eventually emptied all five rounds and put in a new clip. I proceeded to empty that whole clip and the deer finally walked off. The next day I set up a target and we found out the optics in the scope had come loose and were moving every time the gun kicked. I bought a new scope the next monday and the first day last year dropped a deer right through the vitals. I guess I should have shot more rounds when I sighted it in. oh well. It made for an interesting morning for my dad and brother who were listening in from the other side of the property.

I can see why my dad only let me put 1 bullet in the 30.06 the first 2 years I had to hunt with him when I was 13 and 14. My dad was like you're running a bolt action here, you'd never get a decent 2nd shot in this swamp, make the first 1 count like you did in your single shot 20 gauge years, years ago hunting ducks. I think that also taught me don't rush the 1st shot, be patient and whistle him to stop when you have a clear look at the vitals. Doe the first year and a 7 pointer the 2nd, dad was right.

I agree.Sometimes people get carried away and make instant hamburger out of their deer when they shoot. If they had 1 shot rifles I bet they would take more time to get a better shot and not shoot at deer they know they probably just wound and lose it.

When did the holier than thou club show up at FM?

Didn't any of you guys grow up doing deer drives?

I can remember going through a box if shells a day! LOL

I prefer stand hunting myself, but there is nothing wrong with a safe and well executed deer drive......

Nope, never been on a deer drive in my life.... Wont ever do one either. Good way to take a lot of poor shots at a deer and pray you kill it.

Not to change the topic, but I would venture to guess far more deer are wounded and lost on drives, compared to guys on stands hunting naturally moving deer....

Wow. Bman, you said it. I think the point was driven home the first 47 times it was restated. Never done deer drives, kinda hard in northern MN, but give me a 6.8 SPC or 6.5 Grendel with a nice reflex or 3x Trijicon and you better believe I'll take a shot (and another and another) at a runner at a reasonable distance. And I'm gonna keep shooting til it's dead on the ground or gone!! If I'm in a stand and am confident of my shot I'll call it good with 1 shot though. If there's any uncertainty at all though, make it rain!!

Magazines are for guns and CLIPS are for the hair. smile

Already tried to encourage the correct terminology. It failed.

My Barrett Model 98B .338Lapua only comes with 10 round magazines. I am pretty sure I will only need one shot. Even if it is at 1000 yards. wink

Wow, I'd like to see that shot @ 1000yds, the drop at 500yds is over 3' add wind and other variables that would be impressive!

Like Fish said, 1000 yards is a chip shot with a .338

That is why you zero at 1000 yards

I run the Barret BORS system, it is a ballistics computer that attaches to your scope.
