Dog farts...

I'm dogsitting a friend's dogs while he's in the BWCA/Quetico for about a month, and these dogs make a smell I've only encountered around dying things and catfish dipbait. I'm not a dog owner, so I've got a few questions: 1) Is this normal 2) Can I do anything about it? 3)Should I buy them a different food? (The kind he feeds them isn't stocked by the local pet stores, but I bought the closest approximation I could find with the help of the dog-food helper person.) 4) Should I just move out of the house, get a studio apartment, and wait until he gets back?

Both dogs' stools are normal....no diarrhea or anything. And I can't ask him because he's in the woods. Help!!!

Did he not leave you with enough food for the dogs for the time he was gone?

Switching foods on the fly like that can lead to stomach issues which may explain it.

I do not envy you at all. Dog farts have been known to melt paint, start and end wars, and render entire city blocks uninhabitable for weeks.

Maybe they are just nervous around you and get gas that way

Do they go outside and have the opportunity to eat stuff out there such as plants or dead fish?

if they have solid stools, its probably a combination of the food and their nerves. Their leader is missing and someone new is at the helm. Just a guess.

I'd put my money on the food change, although stress could enter into it too.What kind of food was the dog being fed originally and what are you feeding now? You could also be feeding more than he is used to or needs to be fed. It's been my experience that the amount to feed a dog of a given weight printed on most dog food bags is too much. As an example, our bags say feed 1-1/4 cup, but they really need 3/4 to 1 cup, depending on their activity level.

I once fed 'National' dog food to my dogs. It was awesome food. Originally developed for fur farmers and later adapted to dog food... coats were excellent, health was good, stools small and hard.... everything you looked for in a quality food... EXCEPT....

The fowl stench that emminated from those dogs was not of this earth. I mean, at the time they lived outside and I swear it'd wake you from a deep slumber in the winter when your windows were closed. I'd rather eat a garlic and liver sandwich, wearing 2 week old gym clothes with the sneakers as a necklace, while sitting in an out house in July... I even witnessed the dogs get up and walk away after they laid one down and got a wiff! I figured when they did so in their dog houses at night, it only helped to cut down on the amount of time needed to roll in dead things the next day... sheesh

I have learned that they have switched the formula to include an odor eliminator but have never gone back to it. Maybe your brand is too natural such as that was? don't know but I would guess it is food related. It is amazing that those animals can produce that without the aid of hard boiled eggs, jerky and beer!

i just got back from the vet. Lucy is doing great and weighs in at 81 pounds for a female chocolate lab of 11 months old. i would have to say unless i missed it, i haven't had her fart that i know of. my wife said she did one time awhile back. i feed her Diamond brand lamb and rice formula. carrots for treats. she licks our plates at the end of the meal as far as human foods go. we had two big dogs before who passed over 5 years ago and i remember some memorable farts still to this day. however i forgot what i fed them but they lived to be 15 years. good luck.

Yup, he left without leaving me enough food, so I had to go and get some. I was amazed at how many kinds of dog food the store had in stock....kind of mind boggling, actually. Being a neophyte, I just asked for help without inquiring into the consequences coming out the tailpipe.

Thankfully, I didn't get the biggest bag, so we'll be out of this stuff soon.

Any recommendations for what to buy next? Or is this just something I'm going to have to live with?

Oh, and is anyone willing to do some dogsitting? I'll pay....$20 a day!

Do you know what brand and type he was feeding before?

Not all stores carry all brands so you may need to check around for the brand. If you post the brand you are looking for someone here may know where to get it. Otherwise a few phone calls should do the trick.

Hilarious thread. My lab gets the runs and awful skunk toots from rawhide and pressed bones. Those are treats for when we have company to keep her from being too friendly, and then we pay for it the next day.

What's even funnier is when a lab drops one of these bombs, puts it's nose down toward the exhaust pipe and at first gives you the look like 'OMG, I think I just died'... takes a second wiff and then get's up, gives you a dirty look as if you did it to them and goes lays down somewhere else...

1st you laugh and then you run!

The worst was a gas episode in a Bronco II on the way home from a trial in the 80s... windows down did not even help! We may have just as well been in the crate with them!!!

I needed this post, as i am typing my big lab (120 LB) did a drive by on me. He dropped on in front of the couch, scared himself, jumped up and came toward me in the chair. As he passed by me let one go that made the other lab go outside. It is bad when both of the labs let go, no place to hide cause they want to follow us. Good luck.

Ive got two shorthairs so the tails being docked atleast they cant wag their tails to fan it my way and share the stench. I think their gas came from the rawhide bones or a pig ear the get once and awhile.

More than likely Food. The question does he stink when the owner is home too? If not than it could be nerves. If so than definitly the food. Just like people certain foods agree with certain dogs. One brand may be great for some dogs but may not agree with others.

A lot of bully breeds fart, maybe you have a bully breed? The stinky smell is cause by poor quality dog food being fed. I have a bully breed, he farts a lot, before I feed him kibbles, his stools and farts stinks! Now, I feed him raw, his stools doesn't smell. He doesn't fart much and if he does let one rip in a car with no a/c, it doesn't smell.
