I drove up to Fillmore County this Sunday to look for morels, and fish for trout while I was there. My morel season around Iowa City fizzled after a good start for the third year in a row, so once again I had to count on Minnesota.

It was worth the trip, but not the best I have done up there, either. I found some bonus yellows along a trout stream, some yellows in one of my reliable patches in Fillmore County, nothing in another spot that has produced in the past, and some more yellows in some of my timber where I have never found anything before. Here are the better ones I found:

I left quite a few where I found them because they were frost-bitten, or just plain old-looking. You may get some more yellows popping yet close to the Iowa border, but crazy as it is the morel season in southern Minnesota looks to be mostly done before May 1.

They are still popping fresh ones here and there. With a lot of walking my brothers picked up another 15 lbs today, that's 57 lbs for one of them and about 45 lbs for the other. Due to the abundance of mushrooms, they dropped the price to $14 a pound at Webky fur in LaCrosse and the apple orchard by Centerville, WI.

I am up to about 10 lbs so far, but havn't hit it very hard. just eating shrooms and giving them out. My son and Nephew hit a piece of state land yesterday and found 8 lbs, which brings it up to $170 worth they have sold this week.

I just go out an hour here or there after work. I found half a hat full for my folks this evening. Same tree I picked on last week had popped another dozen fresh ones with the recent rain showers. Funny how some trees I can pick on week after week, while others are done after one shot...not sure why.

In my area I am finding very few fresh ones on the south slopes now, but getting a lot of fresh popped muchrooms on the north slopes, and a few yellows just getting started on the north sides in the last few days.

Neat thing with these light showers, then cool trends, is some of these shrooms are looking great for days after they pop instead of wilting away right off.

This weekend should be awesome for the north slopes, but I'm still hitting the good looking elms everywhere when I see them, you never know!

I like following this thread even though I've never seen nor tasted one. I don't like normal mushrooms, so is it even worth trying a Morel?

Nope, stay out of the woods... you wouldn't like them... wink

Honestly, they don't taste like any other mushroom. Whole different flavor and texture isn't as spongy IMO. Doesn't hurt to try!

I haven't found any around Monte yet, but I don't have any established spots. I did talk to some folks that have traditional spots that they check and they have only found 3 total so far this year. But folks are finding them north of us as well. Kind of confusing...

Like Matt said, they don't taste like any other mushroom. Saute them in some butter and garlic salt! Yuuuum! wink

u sound like your sure keeping a close tally on your brothers morel exploits?

Yup, morel season is like deer season, every time we score we let everyone else in the group know! Don't you? Morels, ginseng, deer, bear, turkey we share in the success of the family and all enjoy when another is successful...that's what all this outdoors stuff is all about.

Bart you would probably like them like others have said. I don't like mushrooms either but have been chasing morels for years with my kids. Give it a shot sometime.

lovebigbluegills, you find them right close to TRF there? Only places I remember picking as a kid back home was up near Fourtown, Agassiz, or Beltrami...

Went back out on Sat. and picked a pound, then another pound yesterday. Going to give it a few days before heading back out around here, as it's tough finding bigger ones and sorting right now. I'd say we'll be in the money in a week if we get some warm rain...

Up around the Holt area.

I found some more on Saturday, but they were getting dry. The rain we got last night should be just what the doctor ordered. Around a tenth in town according to the radio, and about 1/4 inch by Holt according to my rain gauge.

Note to self "shrooms popping around Holt" wink

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
