Bucks killed that were on camera?

Recommended Posts

I was talking to my uncles last weekend and we came up with 2 bucks the last 7-8 years on the farm that were on camera that we harvested. We get a ton of bucks from July - hunting season, sometime probably 20+ bucks but don't seem to kill many. We always seem to kill bucks that just appear! Just curious top what others have had for luck killing camera bucks? I got this one opening day some years back and he appeared on camera 3 hours before hand.

My dad harvested a big 10 point last fall that our neighbors camp had on a trail cam a mile and a half north of where he shot it and another group a mile to the south also had the same buck on their trail cams...the pics in both cases varied in time from aug - nov with the buck being on the cams at least once in each local each of those month's...They move around more than most people think, depending on food sources and especilly during the rut. Rut crazed bucks will travel 8 - 10 or more miles from what may be considered their home-range.

My two biggest ones i have shot during bowhunting have been on camera. Mostly within a week or two before they were shot.

Here he is a few days before getting killed.

Yes musky it was the first hunt. I had a great place to sit and scope this area. A couple days earlier I had seen a 9 point about the same size. The deer were moving through an area that was just to risky to put a stand up in. So I got the idea to back off about 75 yards and use a decoy. A button and 5 pointer came in just perfectly. They settled in and munched on acorns around the decoy. The 10 pointer steps out and sees 3 bucks and he came in to investigate. Worked perfectly.

We get pics of a lot of the bucks that we shoot too, but we also get a lot of pics of "wanderers" that come through and are never seen or shot at. I think the type of cover you have in your hunting area greatly influences how many of the ones on the camera that you actually harvest. If you have good bedding cover and food sources, I think there are a lot of "resident" deer that are harvested. However, if the bedding cover is a bit more sparse, and the food is something that tends to die off as the fall progresses, I think you get more "wandering" deer that come through traveling from one area to another.

The last several bucks that I have killed have all been kind enough to show themselves on camera. However, I run cameras most of the year and several of these bucks rarely make appearances or have disappeared for months before showing up during the rut. We've also taken a few bucks that we didn't have photos of - but they haven't been in the areas that we have cameras hanging (within a mile or so).

Yeah, there was a ton of snow that year. I shot him on the 29th, so it was very late. Unfortunately, there was a lot more snow to come that Winter and even worse was the Winter that followed. However, I was lucky enough to get my crack at that one when I did and I'm happy that I made good on the opportunity.

That was the year that my brother nicknamed me "The Barber"- I had shaved the hair off of three different deer in the month before I shot the buck pictured above. Two ducked the string on me pretty bad and one was on a doe that I though was on the 30 yard trail, but she was actually on a trail about 12 yards farther away.

Gloomiseye it looks like you have this deer hunting stuff figured out! Awesome deer!

Haha thanks! Still have a lot to learn though. Now I have to figure out how to outsmart the monsters that are around. Doesn't hurt to live in Iowa either!
