So who's gonna hunt Wolves this fall?

We see plenty from the deer stand, so if the hunt falls within deer season I will apply for a tag. If it doesn't coincide with deer season I probably will not as I really don't have time right now to specifically target them, and I'd rather someone get the tag that can use it with a better chance of success. I do think $50.00 is too much for a wolf tag.

My other concern is I hunt in an area where I have no contact with the outside world, so without a half day of travel, there is no way to check on the status of the quota of 400 wolves. I guess if I get a tag and shoot a wolf, I just head out of the woods, cross my fingers, and call it in.

The DNR does NOT want this season open during deer season. They want it to be a trophy hunt all on it's own for a trophy animal rather than a target of opportunity during deer season. I couldn't agree more. Allow it to be trophy animal of it's own merit.

David Dill, a legislator from the Hibbing area, is the one pushing for the season to be open during deer season. I'm a firm believer that the legislature should stay out of wildlife management.

If it's during deer season, I won't bother buying a license. But, if it's really going to be a wolf hunt, then count me in.

Will this be a statewide hunt ? The thick wolves in my area aren't in the wolf's alledged range. 1st need to line up where and if ok to hunt there and I don't foresee these landowners saying no, but if it's in line with deer season it would be a definite no.

we have had wolves come into doe bleats during the firearms season so I would think calling them would work. They have their home ranges so calling them with howls would work as well. I cant wait to get one. I know everyone in my deer hunting group is drooling at the chance to put a tag on a wolf.

Couldn't agree more! Think it would be too many shoot nows, ask questions later if open during rifle season. Muzzleloader season I could see. They're a game animal now, they should be treated as such.

I plan to apply as well.

Just curious, Many of you say you have seen wolves from your deer stand or on the land you hunt, Do any of you have pictures of these wolves? just seems like you always hear about tons of wolves in the woods but rarey see pictures taken of them.

I will apply for sure no matter when they open it. I would like it during the rifle season as then some would get shot. I highly doubt that they will kill there 400 wolves even during our rifle season. Like others have pointed out not many will beable to put the time in to hunt them on there own it will be more of a right place at the right time thing.

That being said they are big coyotes and shouldn't be treated as a 'trophy hunt". I am fine with a quota, but the tag price should be half that and everyone that wants should be allowed a tag. I plan on trap/snaring one if I can't call one in. Maybe get lucky and run into one while coyote hunting. I am along the red river and we have a few around. I haven't seen one yet this year, but seen the tracks, my uncle seen a pair the other day and has heard them quite a few times.

I also think they should double the quota, and allow unrestricted harvest outside of sometype of wolf zone, as to keep them to the big woods and not in the open farm country. I am all for having them around, but keep them in thier habitat. The only reason they are out here is because there is way more than the 3000 they think they have as they don't do any surveys outside of where they are supposed to be or where they think they should be.

Hopefully the DNR will do this right, and fix it after the first year. But still lots of time to get it right before next year.

I know for sure its going to take a good deal of luck and effort to get one without getting lucky and having one run by a deer hunter once they figure out they are getting hunted.

From the standpoint of decreasing wolf predatation of peoples pets and livestock, I think it would be better to have a wolf season during deer season, wolves would be getting shot and shot at over a bigger portion of their range, making them a little more wary of people and keeping them farther away from houses.

Read Sunday's back sports page star and trib, I liked the old school shoot, shovel, shut up. Anyway, now is the chance for a farmer like that to let some people in who have wolf tags. Maybe they should 1/2 and 1/2 it during rifle season and 1/2 the quota outside/after the rifle season. I'm just thankful we're getting to this point.

I had a thought about the when of wolf season, I'd like to see it after deer season, my best guess is some will go down out of the quota then, then we can take the 400. If my Ottertail county friends and relatives say have at them, I will apply for sure. Yes, Ottertail county is thriving in wolf numbers in places.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
