Busted Fishing Loring Park Minneapolis

Me and the boy (he's 10) went down and drilled about 20 holes this after noon, just got in. One Crappie came out of the hole, and one heavily breathing out of shape young woman came running out to the lake edge screaming/belligerent full on ignorant. She was yelling that the ice was not safe, I said thank you for telling me that but I checked the ice on the way out with my auger and I was at a nice 7.5" of good clear ice. Obviously she must not have heard me but started to get really pushy and yelling. I just looked up and told her she should call the police. She puffed out she would, and she did. The park police showed up about 15 minutes later, and I must say Mpls has some of the prettiest female officers, and real nice too. She told me the dangers of ice and stuff, and then told me she has decided to let me and the boy stay after I told her the real time ice conditions. I did tell her I felt safer standing on the ice than I do driving on their city streets. I also told her that my boy has been waiting for weeks to fish, and now his whole day is ruined because this woman acted the way she did. Concern I get, but a person does not have to be belligerent and tell me I'm a bad parent in front of my kid. The officer left with my drivers licence and when she came back just said be safe and have a nice day.

Oi, On the way home the boy and I talked about it all. He thought the yelling lady was mean and stupid. I told him she was ignorant; that is: she did not know the ice conditions and probably just watches the news and reads the paper, I went on to say yes people have gone through, but very few compared to all the people who participate in this sport, if you use common sense and make good decisions you should be ok, at least most of the time. I also went on to say that people are entitled to have their opinions, but not their own facts.

Up side to this is that it was a teachable experience for the boy, it will give him stories to tell at school.

I had a lady call the cops on me last friday on Nokomis. The park police showed up, guy got out of his car, came down to the edge of the ice and asked me how much ice I had. I yelled back 8", he said "8"? Ok thanks" Got back in his car and drove off.

At least the cops have a clue.

Cutos on keeping calm and being civil. A good lesson for your son . I try not to be a smartarse when I'm around young ones, but it can be trying at times. Some people shouldn't drink coffee to excess while watching the news. On the bright side, just be glad she doesn't live next door to you.

The lady sounds like the Fish Lake Lady (Duluth area) that was tormenting us a couple of years ago. Her main beef was guys stepping out of their houses for a quick "wizz" which I guess was fair, but she took it over the top with her yelling and threats to call the cops and DNR. She teed on me one day because there was a plastic bag stuck against my Otter and it was sure to blow away. I just stood there, looked at her and said nothing. I don't know what happend to her, but I haven't seen her or heard of her going after anyone in awhile.

Yes the Park Board determines when the ice is safe and does regulate when you can fish on the lake.

PB2-23. - Safety of ice.

No person shall be upon, ice skate, ice fish, use, place or have a snowmobile, ice boat or any other structure, device, apparatus or equipment upon any lake or body of water, whether a moving stream or otherwise, under the jurisdiction of the park and recreation board, until the superintendent of parks, or his designee, shall determine and declare the ice thereon to be safe. (Code 1960, As Amend., § 1010.390)

So yes she was doing her job. And people will get robbed and beaten while she takes burglary reports, damage to property reports, takes a person to jail or even a bathroom break. That is a fact of life quit being such a hater, she did what she was required to do and left the original poster with a postive contact.

I'm glad that the ordinance isn't vague at all. Ice is never 100% safe. Just another way of controlling by being subjective. How this got to be an ordnance is beyond me.

There must be a precedence of the ice decreed safe, I wonder what test they use, probably 911 call volumes from shut-ins who are afraid of every thing.

Simple signs could could be put up at lake edges, like they do at other lakes. But I s'pose they don't want the responsibility and or liability of making the call. Maybe the park and city lakes should just ban all ice activities or when the calls come in, instead of the police driving out to the site and having to talk to me they should just tell the caller that it is a risk that is my right, just like those rancid meatballs they sell at Ikea I love so much.

Maybe they can determine when the roads are safe for travel, when the streets are safe for a walk, when it is safe to bike.... Heck maybe they could have a law to govern every little thing we do from the time we get up till the time we go to bed.

Ah the utopian society of hope and change...may I be dead before I fall victim to it.

Personally I would have walked up to her and explained how safe this ice was. And try to teach her a thing or two. If that didn't work and she still was a crazy woman yelling and screaming at me I would have helped her call the cops while she stayed there and yelled at me. Then when the cops arrived I would have let them take care of her. Let cooler heads prevail.

    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
