Smile please!!!

You just shot a deer or caught a nice fish, now smile for the camera!! So many pictures of people that look darn right mad in a picture after they harvest/catch a great animal/fish. Pictures look so much better in my opinion when you smile! Had to post this after talking to a buddy that looks mad in every picture! Good luck rest of year! grin

Me too. Seems to be the "in" thing. First time I really noticed it was among waterfowlers. I think the "I'm a bad mo-fo" look stemmed in large part from "whack'em and stack'em" videos. Being a tough, moody guy who shot piles of birds didn't warrant acting happy.

Oh well, as the saying goes, "this too shall pass."

Some hate pictures, if you were on my football or hockey team you were ridiculed if you smiled, for me this year I couldn't smile, dragging out a 194# buck by myself I was out of gas when the pics were taken. lol, yep neither grandpa smiled, never for a photo, if so you had to catch them by surprise, if they knew a picture was coming it didn't happen. In my family to guys were hardened, they fought world war 2 and vietnam, etc. They went through a lot making ends meet, labor was tougher, they didn't have the machines/technology we have today, heck you actually had to go get your film developed, everytime and those old pictures are real classics.

But were those guys in those old photos not smiling because they were ornery old coots, or were they trying to look distinguished? You didn't see many smiles in old photographs, period. It just didn't happen. Most family portraits were of everyone standing there, dead calm and emotionless. Somewhere along the way someone decided all these photographs of people sure looked melancholy. I'm guessing it was a photographer from Wisconsin who invented "Say cheese!" and got people to smile.

I know in really old photos people would never smile becuase they had to hold dead still for long exposure times. A smile was too hard to hold without moving and in turn blurring the photo. Old school cameras weren't exactly point and click. I'm guessing there was some carry over through a few generations where smiling just didn't happen because no one ever smiled for a camera before that.

lol, the best smile pictures of old in my family were when the old milwaukee was flowing and the boys and girls were getting tongue tied. It would be a cool thread to see old deer hunting pics from the archives. The old vehicles, guns, coveralls, hats, eye glasses, expressions, etc.

this last deer season we were at my uncles for the usual friday night get together and we broke out his old photo albums. What a trip. He had some great pictures from the 70's and 80's. Alot of them were from my first memories of hunting. Not a lot of deer were shot, but man, there was a lot of socializing.
